Greetings from a new monkey

Howdy all. I'm a new member to the forum and a (mostly) newb to prepping. A friend of mine, @Jeff Brackett suggested I join. I've known him for quite a long time and what little I know about prepping I've learned from him.

I've been aware that I should be doing more to be prepared for a tragic event occurring, but haven't taken the steps to do so. With the world getting crazier by the day I figure it is best to start learning now, even if I'm coming to the party a little late.

My basic view of prepping is based on the show The Walking Dead. If you're familiar with the show, the main character, Rick, is thrust into an extreme situation when the zompocalypse happens. He and his family manage to get along and find other like minded souls along the way. Then they come up against Neegan, great as a character villain, but is a truly awful person. In the event the stuff hits the fan, I'd prefer that the world had more Ricks, less Neegans.

Most of us here are not gloom and doom, end of the world folks awaiting a bunch of walking dead people, mostly democrats that vote. We prep because that's the only way to not be dependent on a failed system when infrastructure collapses and it does on occasion. Most of us have lived through major disruption of infrastructure and while others had to await someone to bring them help, we didn't need it and was able to share and help our family and friends get through until some new form of normalcy returned. My welcome to you is tentative, but highly suppose you'll be disappointed if you start looking around for nut-cases that build bunkers and await the zombie hordes. Welcome, none the less.

 

Although I enjoy the walking dead show it has nothing to do with my prepping. I prep because I have a family and I want them to be safe if anything happens. I also want to be able to help my friends and family, not be a hinderance to them. I also have a normal life like most of the folks on here. Like Seacowboys said, you might be disappointed if you are looking for the msm view “survivalists”.

 

Welcome to the Tree @jameshusum ! If you need some zombies to experiment with just bring a U-Haul (or two or several) to Portland and I'll set you up. Pretty easy to take care of, but upkeep is kind of expensive - They need need drugs, Starbucks soy something or others, and Doritos on an hourly basis. Almost forgot, you need to build something "racist" they can periodically burn down. We think that may be a mating ritual, but nobody can understand them so we don't really know. Don't waste your money on showers because they won't use them. Ditto for toilets as they prefer downtown storefronts or just wherever they happen to be at the time.

In any event, pull up a stump and join the party. Preparedness is mostly living like people did when we mostly lived on farms. It's about being more resilient, more self reliant, and more adaptable. The idea is to accept that every so often, for a variety of reasons, the train goes off the rails and you need to be able to take care of yourself and your loved ones until it gets back on the tracks.

One thing to keep in mind here - most of the survival/preparedness topics have been well covered so they mostly get read as opposed to being active discussions. So, say 95% reference,5% active discussion. What you will see as the most active discussions are generally off topic. It's mainly camaraderie and to a certain extent old men (and wimmin') yelling the equivalent of "get off my lawn!".

You will have questions, please ask. This isn't a community where you will be chastised for asking a "dumb question" or because you didn't search. It will be seen by the community as an opportunity to review the existing topic and update it. New members are our greatest inspiration to make "on topic" subjects active.

I liked TWD in the beginning, thought it seemed more of a how-not-to guide to prepping, unless you like eating owls and enjoy spending an evening nitpicking the impossibilities (like usable 10 year old gas). Mostly I found myself rooting for annoying characters to just die already, and after Rick passed up endless chances to take Negan out with a nicely placed headshot in favor of chatting over a fence, I began wishing he too would get a date with Lucille. But that might just be me, coz I'm kind of an ass.

Welcome to the Monkey. It's not as entertaining as zombies and Whisperers, but you should find it more useful in your efforts to get prepared for whatever may come.

Made nanner brandy once after a truck hauling bananas got blown over on I40 and the driver told everyone who stopped to take what they wanted. It received an enthusiastic, if slightly wobbly, thumbs up from the monkeys in my hood.

We all started somewhere. for me its a way of life learned from an early age and has gotten me thru lean financial times.

Life never goes the way you want it too 100% of the time so its good to plan ahead.

We have lots of different opinons here and we argue like a tight knit family. Some times annoying just like family can be but there is always respect here that is not on alot of other sites.

Banana beer/brandy? and why haven't you posted a recipe? it sounds disgusting but when ya need alcohol ya need alcohol
