Went looking for a scope for the Enfield. I seached ebay "rifle scope" and first listing was a "new in the box rifle scope":1minute50seconds left$19.00+$9.95 shipping (that was the complete description and a picture).bid$35.00won it at $29.00counting shiping(total) matched up the picture with an ncstar 3-9x40 rubber covered one with flip up see through covers and rings, I either got real lucky or I'm out $29.00 fora chinese toy or scam.... Picture looked good have to see what/if it shows up in the mail.. Anybody ever hear of these??

Ncstar is a chinese government owned company that copies everything. That is both good and bad. Trijicon sued them for making a copy of their acog and won the suit. If I had to guess I would say you would get 80% of the performance at 33% of the price of the copied original. Ncstar's products work but there are corners cut so don't expect the world. Most decent optics that come from china are actually made by ncstar no matter what brand is stamped on them.

Most likely you didn't waste your money (if it does arrive) and it should function to expectations as long as you don't expect top dollar performance. It will most likely surprise you for a $29 item.

Thanks Hartage, I realize you get what you pay for (I started looking and Got worried; found them listed in conjunction with paintball and airsoft.though the ads talk about handling shotguns and heavy recoil)...

IKnow I shouldn't scrimp on something , I may use to save my hide someday...the "deneiro" just isn't there, for a heavy barrel police.308 and leupold or national match m1a1...I'm putting the scope on for ease of adjustment.

The original "battle sights present a nice picture(flip peep rear300/600)butyou change the front post(in a dovetail to adjust elevation)slideit to adjust windage). I found a set of sights, I just haven't got around to spending a day on it with a toolbox. Its prettyclose at 300 (minute of man. anyway).
100/150 is pretty much all I need here.

    Bad things:
(I really don't like): by putting the mount on I lose the fixed rear sight and the ability to use my strippers. So I have to pickup a few magazines.

Its mostly an experiment at this stage anyway. Just to try a scope on that rifle..if I don't like it the fixed rear goes back on and the scope goes back up on ebay. :)

Im recieved a 303 by way of inheritance. the rifle is pretty solid, other than the fact someone before me dindt keep up with the rifle and the muzzle end of the barrel is really corroded. It is so bad that you can not make out the rifling.
I think I am going to cut that part of the barrel off and create a new crown.
While I was doing that I figured a scope would be a good option.
what scope mount did you go with?
And you have to let us know how the NC Star does.

Instead of cutting off the barrel, think about boring out the spoiled rifling at the business end for an inch or so if that will get rid of the ruined rifling. That way, you cannot run afoul of some length restriction and don't have to mess with resetting the front sight.

I couldn't find the 3-9x40 but here are some reviews on the Cheaper Than Dirt website for a 6-24x50.

It is a good quality scope depending on the specific scope you get; some just come off of the assembly line wrong. Mine has served me well on my .300 remington helping me achieve several 300 and over yard shots. The illuminated recticle is a joke making it hard to see in low light conditions on the lowest power of illumination. If you are going to buy this scope, do not believe everything you read, however, it has served me well so far.</TD></TR><TR><TD class=HeadingMed colSpan=2>[IMG] It is OK, </IMG>09/17/2007</TD></TR><TR><TD class=HeadingSmall colSpan=2>Reviewer: Brian</TD></TR><TR><TD class=HeadingSmall colSpan=2>Bought this scope (from another sight that had a sale on em and I purchased the range finding recticle version). I put it on my .243. The scope is typical of the mid quality Chinese made optics. Everything does work on it including the illumination. However, when illuminated you can see the glue and other materials inside the tube of the scope. Clarity is not bad on 24 power due to the AO and really good on 6x power. It does seem to hold zero well on the .243. However, I think for my next scope, I will shell out a few more bucks and get one with "fully multi-coated" glass, such as a Nikon. Especially for any real long range shooting. 3 bullets because it is not a great scope but not that bad....unfortunately when it comes to scopes, you do get what u pay for. These are all NCStar (New Century) scopes. MM

I bought an ATI mount off ebay for around $35.00. Iif you are going to cut it back; look into the no5 carbine, I guess there used to be a look alike kit, with a flash hider and the like, the #5 its supposed to "kick""noticeably"( probably along the the lines of the mn m44)...again if you use the ATI no gunsmith mount you loose the rear sight and the ability to use strippers;but the mag is easily changed.. let you know more as I get it together.

Mage2 -- Dunno that it matters greatly, but for comparison, my MN M44 is a pussycat with the Wolf 150 grain fodder. MUCH less a problem than a Krag carbine for example. (I'll shoot the russian all day after 20 rounds of 30-40.) If the scope is properly mounted on your Enfield, you should have no problems with busted glasses or the scimitar eyebrow mark. Please excuse the O/T and good luck with it.

    Tango,
    sorry about hijacking the thread.
I found that ATI scope mount. Have you tried it out yet? Does it hold zero? how difficult was the install?

Before I got my grubby hands on this enfield (#4 mk1) someone else cut off part of the forestock and like i said really did some damage to the end of the barrel.
other than losing the front sight and the barrel length what other problems could i run into by cutting instead of boring. I am not a gunsmith but I do some metal work. I am some what confident that i can crown the barrel if i were to cut it and clean it. I do not think i could pull off boring the barrel that far down without problems.
I love the wood stock but I am thinking about also putting a composite stock on it.

No hijack I purposely open stuff like this to generate ideas and some kind of a discussion.

Sorry, expect the scope in a few days, (don't want to disable the rifle (i.e.,remove the rear sight until I have a scope in hand.) haven't bothered to even install the mount, yet .(looks elementary though).I am not a 'smith either, but (common sense and a few years in industrial maintenance fab says: )I would look to a brownells catalog for a tool to "crown" with rather than just run a common "countersink" or "counterbore" in. I would imagine you'd want any "countersink " or finished edge to be perfectly centered on the bore axis(perfect 90degress to the AXIS,not the outside of a tapering barrel.). This would be a question for any real 'smiths here...
"bubba-ized" enfields are common. AtI(?) makesa "monte carlo" sporter stock

I really dont like the idea of "bubba-izing" a wonderful rifle, the problem is given its current condition I do not know what else to do with it.
    Any ideas?

"bubbaizing is not meant at what you're doing ,you're rescuing it, I meant you see alot of them cheap on the rack with of the with fore ends chopped off. The no5 jungle carbine kits allow you to create a handy powerful rifle, from an abused piece.I've got a nice no4 made by savage (us property) and wouldn't dare cut it up.

By the way the head space is adjustable by changing the bolt face, they are numbered. And make sure the serial number on the bolt handle matches the reciever serial# as well,.as with any surplus piece fire it first time with out shouldering it; and check the case over for cracks and the primer for problems anything looks weird; have a qualified gun smith check it over.
Or just start there and have him go over it first. the trigger is adjustable too, Enfields are known to have the best triggers on any military rifle.
    good luck and Cheers[booze]

I've heard both good and bad about the NCStar scopes. I just got a scout mount for the Mosin, and have it on my Hex-receiver M91/30. I can finally use the NCStar 2-7X32 LER scope I bought awhile back. Hope it holds up to the recoil.
So far, it shows promise, but it 'walks' in elevation - the mount's setsecrews need a dab of blue loc-tite.
    Time will tell.

well I got it, and so far I'm not dissapointed, illuminated p4 reticle( fine center crosshairs are 1moa with bars for2,3,4,5 moa ), flip up see through caps front and rear.
(haven't shot the scope yet),worst part our local community range doesn't open until May!so I'll just have to do an unofficial field test somewhere.... The .303; better than a poke in the eye with a sharpened stick wot?Just what ya need toworry the jerry's from a position n the belltower.roight!

[IMG]Looking at just over $190.00.00(not,300, forgot I only gave around $160 for the rifle). Not much of a close quarters tool, but may come in handy from under a burlap covered net...or a tree stand.or a backyard hole??[sawgunner]

Hey tango, if you want low price and accurate you might want to consider the savage line of rifles.

You can get them with a scope already attatched and boresighted for around $360. They are widely known and respected to be accurate rifles and especialy so considering their price. Most will do better than 1" groups at 100 yards right out of the box. Some of the better models with the accutrigger people are getting 1/4 inch groups out of the box.

Oh yeah, I hate to make a statement then not back it up. Rumor has it the main reason for savages being accurate is the method used to rifle the barrel. They use a difficult method called "button rifleing". A tungsten "button" is pulled through the barrel (inherrently more stable). As opposed to the easier and cheaper hammer forging where the cutter is pushed through the bore.

That is just what I've read but seems the reputation of savages as accurate are quite solid.

Also forgot.... to further make it affordable they have the "stevens" line of rifles. Made by savage company with the same rifleing method just with an "off brand" name. You can get one of those retail for around $250 no scope though. Also no accutrigger but even without that I am willing to bet it will outshoot that enfield. All for the rock bottom price of $250 and you get to pick your caliber.

Stevens is an old and respected name in gun manufacturing - not an 'off brand' at all. Let's cal it the 'economy line'. [beer]

Savage does show that a good rifle can be made without having to mortgage the house to buy. Some folks don't like the 'ugly' barrel nut - but that feature makes for easy barrel swapping (still need a good 'smith) if you want to change calibers.
