CPU fan seems to have quit working. While searching for info, found a post at Toms hdwe, that stated a BIOS setting may have been at fault. Is that possible ? Unit in question is my son's. Where are some economical yet reliable places to shop for parts ? Anyone ever use altex.com ? annie
BIOS will not cause a fan to fail unless a setting is changed (which I do not believe can be done without deliberate messing with the settings in some way that results in an unexpected glitch.) Those fans do not last forever, I've had two quit on me over the last ten years, so I'd go with getting some maintenance done. The motors on those fans are not exactly hugely powerful, and if not cleaned out periodically, will freeze up on guck. They are quite inexpensive, so I wouldn't worry about cost of a new fan; the part that gets pricey is if you hire changing it done. If you do not fear crawling around inside the box, try cleaning first with an air can, or better yet, a computer vacuum, less chance of damaging things with too intense an air blast. YMMV.
I agree with Ghrit. I've never heard of one, just quitting, because of a bios setting without deliberately getting into the bios and changing something. Power down, unplug, let it set for a few minutes, clean out the fan blades with q-tips and an air can. If that doesn't work just buy a new one..... they are very cheap.
Finding "THE" one is the problem. Spent $20. on one & it doesn't fit. could probable get a store credit, which I don't want or need. Store I orig purchased from doesn't have just the fan & commented that warranty didn't cover cig smoke. Thanks for the reply and cleaning has been tried. I usually use a q-tip dipped in alcohol--- with fan removed of course. annie

Newegg.com is a good place to shop. They are honest, good in price and ship very quickly. As others have said the bios is unlikely to cause the cpu fan to not work. Most likely reason for fans not working are the bearing going out or something obstructing it from turning. It will be easier to replace the whole fan/heatsink vs finding just the fan to replace. When replacing it just go slow and make sure you don't put too much pressure on a cpu corner and end up chipping it. Amd cpu's are notorious for that since they have a bare die. Also if the heatsink does not have a thermal compound already attatched to it don't forget to add your own. Just bare heatsink to bare cpu is not good enough, needs thermal compound in between. if this isn't already fixed, and other are reading... be very careful if/when trying to change your cpu cooler. There is a heat transfer 'glue' that is often between the heat sink and the CPU. Some of the fans are mounted in such a way that you end up pulling out the CPU with the fan and sink. If you were like me a few yrs back, and pulled this trick while ducking under a desk with flashlight in mouth and Hiball sweating on the desk, you'll quickly try to reinsert the CPU and bend a few pins over. Even dumber is that you may not know you bent those pins over and crossed a few and you power back up and trip a breaker in your PSU. Bad stuff. Then you get to buy a new fan, sink, Intel chip, and MB. Good news is that you just forced yourself to do an upgrade for 3 or 400.
Melbo, that was just so funny, uh that is, cause it didn't happen to me. chuckle-chuckle I did have a friend who ordered and installed cpu, heat sink & no fan, which fried it. He tried to blame mail order company, didn't work. Had to purchase new board and the whole nine yards. I haven't ordered replacement parts yet. Really liked the link from Conagher new sources for me. annie
Geeks.com is good I've been dealing with them for a very long time. Shipment is prompt and they are always profesional. tigerdirect.com is a different story. They don't honor their rebates and have been sued in the past multiple times for various things. I would be leery of them.
Thank you, hartage. Tiger Direct is the one who refused to accept responsibility for the "no fan" situation. So knowing this I will stay away from them. I will hope to order something in next week or two. annie
