    Just watched the re-run.

Ron Paul thinks (and I agree) we should not have ever had the civil war. Russert tries to paint him as a racist by saying "We'd still have slavery". What a joke!

RP did o.k., but damn, what an onslaught of baseless, bullshit attacks by Russert.

That was a joke. Slavery was on it's way out anyway. The invetion of the cotton gen was pushing slavery out.

Virginia (the capitol of the Confederate States) was the first state to outlaw the importation of slaves. The Confederate Constitution outlawed the importation of slaves. At the start of the Civil War New York city had the highest per capita rate of slaves of any city in the nation. The emancipation proclamation only freed slaves in Southern held territory (Lincoln wanted to tie up Southern troops queling a slave rebellion.) The South would have freed slaves eventually and had already started down that road, but their economy was so tied up in the slave trade that they need more time to transition to a slave free nation. This is all assuming, of course, that you've bought into the bullshit that the War of Northern Agression was fought solely to free the slaves.

It is obvious that Tim has structured an interview to make Paul appear shifty and unable to answer in a clear concise manner. Russet obviously had ample time to prepare however he drops everything in Paul's lap in a confusing manner. I'm afraid that people seeing that for the first time will not get a balanced impression of Paul. Paul did a phenomenal job of handling himself but Russert did so much moving around that I think very little of the actual meat of what Paul was saying will stick with people usually affiliated with one party or those sitting on the fence, the only impression they're left with is Dr. Paul can't seem to formulate a good answer.

Before I'm attacked keep in mind I fully support (verbally and financially) Dr. Paul and wish him the best but this interview was one of the better structured attacks on him. He, Dr. Paul, is such a challenge to the establishment they can't imagine life outside of their world...and it is becoming more obvious everyday how scared they are.

Don't you mean the War of Northern Aggression?

Goatman's right. Lincoln didn't free the slaves. Eli Whitney did.
Unfortunately, the 16th amendment reinslaved them, along with everyone else.

As for the ambush interview, that's just Russert's style. He does that to everyone. In that regard, he's possibly the fairest national level journalist. To his credit, Paul held up far better than most. I actually thought Russert was a little more shaken than Paul was. He's used to people arguing with his hit pieces, not proudly expanding on them.

Firt, the war between the states was for expansion of federal power and subjegation of states rights. I believe that any honest evaluation of history will point to that event as the beginning of our current big brother federal monstrosity of a government.

Second, as to the interview I saw it differently. I thought Paul did extremely well. The mud slinging, using your own words to expose you, tactics of Russert are his normal modis operandi. Paul turned the tables,IMO, everytime. I didn't think he came off as unsure or unable to answer.

I think that if I had never of heard of him I would have been impressed and wanting to learn more. But at least he is getting more mainstream attention and that is a win-win situation for him.
