the jetboil stove from REI and other suppliers is a great item to have in your pack or vehicle.it's a travel cup sized propane cooking system that consists of a aluminum travel cup and a propane burner w/igniter that snaps onto the bottom.it boils water incredibly fast and has a optional coffee maker attachment.I use mine a lot for traveling and camping.it's the perfect thing for making a quick hot drink or ramen. I couldn't agree more. They're a bit pricey but very lightweight and great, fast, heat. I recommend them highly.
Can you use other propane/fuel cannister brands with the stove or can you only use the Jetpower fuel? The user's manual only recommends their brand but wasn't sure if that is the usual legal disclamer.
I have 2 and 2 extra cups. (Companion cups) I use all types of fuel cans with no problems... butane is butane is butane. I used to pack a large cookset for all of my chow when in the back country. Once we switched over to Mountain House for our meals, the JB was all we needed. I am a JB snob though and have one cup set up for coffee and another set up for water boiling only. JC Refuge here at the monkey has them and the rest of the accessories. Highly recommended.
I have cans of the JB fuel and some other brand that was much cheaper. The salesman told me that it would be alright to use the "off brand" and I haven't had any explosions or failures (Yet). I don't think you'll be disappointed with the JB. Mine works great.
Some butane cannister brands are blended with other gasses for better cold weather performance..some have a little propane(or "iso butane"mixed) iirc.because the different fuels have different vapor pressures at various temps.
Love the JB going to get one for my boy as he is going into Boy Scouts very soon, nice compact system for cooking when in the back country 2 cups is a must though, this way while you eat you can boil up some coffee or tea
The jetboil system is great! Compact, easy to use, and with the handy dandy coffee press it fits my needs beautifully. I've made more coffee with it than anything else. Can't camp without coffee. I'm not much into winter camping so I don't really worry about the cold climate use but I'm sure if I had to use it in the cold I'd figure a way for it to work nicely. (throw it in the fire for a second...hahah!) In all seriousness though, I'd recommend the jetboil for most applications.
jetboil has a website with recepes and oher jetoil stuff.if you have a fried or amilymember in the service the jetboil is a great gift to increase the quality of life in remote places

At high altitude a mixed gas works better than just butane, I have a multi-fuel that will burn various liquid fuels and also a propane/butane mix. I usually use white gas but the mixed gas is prefered by my wife, doesn't flair up like the liquids do. If weight is a problem then the white gas is a little better, don't have to carry the empty canister with you and it will last longer. (1 fuel canister lasts longer than 1 gas bottle.
I bought a small Coleman Max propane kit, very small and simple. The small fuel canisters work well. I still prefer my Kelly Kettle for everything. I won't go anywhere without it.
Been using an old Olympus for nearly 40 years. It uses gasoline and self primes/pumps. Simple, ultra reliable, compact, and nothing to wear out or lose. Will change the top half so I can remove it and use it for a small pot. It will "smoke" a pot of water in a skinny minute.
Sterno Inferno + trangia burner = 2 cups of boiling water in 4 min. For a fraction of the cost of a JB, and its Green! I do have a Jet Boil Flash system that was a gift to me.

I think that there are more affordable options that are more sustainable when austere conditions may apply.
Love and hate butane stoves, given that propane expands and cools, at low temps it doesn't work well, butane doesn't have same limits. Given cost of refills, plan on using refilled propane or wood gas type stove if SHTF. Really type stove for ultra light camping in areas where there is not wood or open type fires prohibited.
BTW - I bought a Lindal (Lyndal) valve to propane adapter so as to be able to use the 1 lb bottles found @wallyworld.
Do you mean you are using that adapter to feed direct to the JB stove? or are you refilling the small cans with Lp?
I have an adapter to run the JB from a 1 lb propane bottle if I wish. I've had a 1 lb bottle refill adapter for over a decade. The JB adapter costs less than a can of the mixed fuel here locally. Seems silly not to have it at hand....
