I have an old Barnett 150 lb crossbow (non-compound) that I'd like to hunt the small Texas whitetail with. Does anyone know if it's up to the task using broadheads? I know that I'll need spin stabilized arrows like regular archers do, as opposed to what is usually sold commercially. Any suggestions?

Yes it's up to the task. Is it legal in Texas? Some states allow them others don't. IIRC here in Mo. you can only use them during gun season. They sell bolts (thats what you call the arrows for crossbows) with feathers on them to stablize the flight.

Take the xbow with you to the nearest archery center (phone book) or to a Gander Mountain/Bass Pro Shop.

They'll hook you up with the correct sized bolts with fletching and some good broadheads.

My opinion for archery is you don't need to go with the ultra top end expensive stuff, but you should also stay away from the bargain bin stuff. Somewhere in the middle is the sweet spot.

    One tip...(bows or xbows)

Get a couple field points of the same weight as the broadheads you'll be using for practice..... and do practice, a lot. It's really easy to end up with a wounded deer that you'll never recover when using archery. You owe it to the animal.

Then also practice some with the broad heads since even with the same weight tips broadheads and field/practice tips will fly different.

I like you have an old Barny they set the standard years ago for quality and yes anything thatn has a 150# draw will kill a deer. Also as was pointed out get field pt's the same wieght as your broadheads and pratice with both they have different points of impact.
And lastly keep in mind there's no recoil from the bow so don't flinch I have had people drop my Crossbow expecting to be punched in the shoulder and instead the bow jumps foward out of their hands.
