I came up with some plans for a simple forge, I used google sketchup to draw out the pictures and such. if you have not used this program, its pretty easy to learn.

What do you think of this design?
    forge plans.

It will use 3 of the 3x4.5x9 soft fire bricks and 1 1x4.5x9 hard fire brick. Some wire/frame are not in the pic yet,but im thinking about brazing together mild steel angle bar to form a simple frame to hold the bricks.

Mine is kinda like that - 3 soft fire bricks but no hard brick or metal framing. But mine is just for heating up the occasional 01 knife for heat treat. I don't know if the metal framing will make it last longer but if it does go for it!

I like the design... especially if you can change out the floor (hard brick)...
Soft brick is pretty soft and it will be nice to be able to switch it... especially if you plan to experiment with forge welding... flux makes a mess of the brick...
If you make a frame... you may want to make it so you can easily take it apart... I've found that the brick opposite the burner deteriorates after time... especially if you use Mapp and crank it up...
Either way it will be versatile to be able to take it apart and switch out the brick if you need too...
    Great stuff....
Any reason why you're not using all hard brick?.... I know soft is way easier to cut... just wondering...

Yes the floor would be replaceable.
The main reason is because it would cost more and is harder to cut, using soft I am using the brick as some of the support to hold up the top, if I used hard only then i would have to build a more robust frame to hold up the top. Thats because where the soft bricks are 3x4.5x9 the hard is only 1x4.5x9. I was planning on just a simple open top frame used mostly to keep the bricks aligned or if I were to bump the forge it would not shift.

    make sense?

    Makes sense...
I just cut a bunch of hard fire brick... although i did it with a portaband and a remgrit blade... went through it like butter... ok... maybe not that easy... but pretty easily...
Sound like you have a great plan there....
