I just found this quote from former Attorney General under GWB, John Ashcroft. I didn't think it was possible for GWB to surround himself with people that were even dumber than himself, but he sure found a good one here. I didn't think it was possible for someone to have said something so outrageous, but it appears to be true. If you can find something that says it's false, please let me know. "I feel the best way to ensure Americans' freedom is to tighten restrictions on that freedom in any way possible. Only through wiretaps, illegal searches and seizures, unfettered government intrusion, a controlled media and a complete crackdown on free speech can we ensure the liberties of all people." (John Ashcroft)</pre>
Ya, and this is the guy that stood up to and denied extra wiretapping liberties wanted by Gonzales. (gonzales wanted doj aproval) If ashcroft's views are so dim concerning civil liberties imagine how much worse gonzale's or bush's must be.
I had several hits - Huffington post, Daily Kos, Slate discussion forum, etc., but never a link to original source, cite to a specific event, speech, or interview, or any kind of evidence. I find it difficult to believe Ashcroft said anything that insane unless he was on some heavy meds, but who knows?
I find it hard to believe that anyone in their right mind would say something that crazy, so I'm leaving a little space for doubt. That crap is straight outta 1984.
Sounds a little far-fetched though I wouldn't put it past some of these politicians. Look at what they are doing to our military family. And if anyone has not read 1984, I very much recommend it. It's a great thing to keep an eye on.
He wants to take away freedoms to make us more free? WTF,O? I find it hard to believe Ashcroft would be that moronic. That quote has to be invented.

Here is some insight into why they will not win this election! Quote from one Elephant: "Only those that understand the Freedoms of a Republican form of government, will be able to make the necessary and sacrificial choices." McCain on Immigrants: "There's 2 million people who are here who have committed crimes. They have to be rounded up and deported."--Never answered exactly how . Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. "The implication that there was something wrong with the(Iraqi) war plan is amusing." Attorney General John Ashcroft "I feel the best way to ensure Americans' freedom is to tighten restrictions on that freedom in any way possible. Only through wiretaps, illegal searches and seizures, unfettered government intrusion, a controlled media and a complete crackdown on free speech can we ensure the liberties of all people."---Yes, he really said this. President Bush:"I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully."---Saginaw, Mich., Sept. 29, 2000 President Bush: "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." —Washington, D.C., Aug. 5, 2004 Ronald Reagan: "It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?" McCain: "I believe in evolution. But I also believe, when I hike the Grand Canyon and see it at sunset, that the hand of God is there also."--Slight contradiction of beliefs. George W. Bush: "See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda." --Greece, N.Y., May 24, 2005 The best thing is, after reading a few dozen more, you start to realize that political humor is the best way to get a laugh now-a-days. At the same time, you realize these people have power, and are actually this stupid. The amazing thing is, America voted these idiots in, and that doesn't say much for the voters. If you go back in the past, the quotes make more sense. The politicians of today, are nothing like their predecessors. Degeneration in ethics, and humanity might be the factor? For example: Benjamin Franklin: "All mankind is divided into three classes: those that are immovable, those that are movable, and those that move." Dwight D. Eisenhower: "If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom." John Adams: "All the perplexities, confusion and distress in America arise, not from defects in their Constitution or Confederation, not from want of honor or virtue, so much as from the downright ignorance of the nature of coin, credit and circulation." Andrew Jackson: "As long as our government is administered for the good of the people, and is regulated by their will; as long as it secures to us the rights of persons and of property, liberty of conscience and of the press, it will be worth defending." Major General Smedley Butler, USMC, 1933: "There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights. War for any other reason is simply a racket." I wish we could clone some of these political dinosaurs! Report abuse Re: The Political Pickle: Best Quotes Ever!
Thanks Tango, I couldn't find any validity to the quote. I guess we know how he really feels about us simpletons
Wow, I wasted a lot of time on this one. Here's my pasted google search FWIW. Nothing to say where or when he said it, no link anywhere except among these publications, no speech or interviews cited.
