Yesterday evening I went to the range with a couple of friends to do a little shooting. We arrived at the range later than intended, but nonetheless enjoyed the outing. We shot Shotguns, ARs, an AK, 1911s, and Springfield XDs. Ungodly amount of noise and concussive blast. When shooting it at night, it did put out one helluva flame. I see no reason for me to own one, might borrow it if I ever decide to hunt in grizzly territory. I shot it in single action and double action, the single action I found to be very accurate. After shooting it double action, the double action trigger was the longest trigger imaginable upon the earth at this time. The recoil was very stiff, but not as bad as I anticipated. When my buddy asked me what I thought of it, well I told him "I am glad it is yours and not mine." Not to mention that each pull of the trigger cost about $2.50. I am sure the 8 3/8 inch barrel version would be a lot more to my liking. When standing to the side and behind while someone is shooting this you feel the concussion like waves hit you. I am sure it is due to the muzzle brake. Best advice, stand directly behind the shooter. It is a great conversation piece, but at right at $1,000 a very expensive one. Next up we shot my friends new Smith & Wesson LW commander 1911. This light weight 1911 commander with the scandium frame was a joy to shoot. The S&W 1911PD features a lightweight scandium receiver and a blued steel slide. Note the smaller markings on the receiver compared to previous S&W 1911s. I shot about three mags through it and it was very accurate. I did not measure my groups, but from about 15 yds. shooting a IDPA torso target, I emptied an entire 8 rd. mag into the head of the target shooting as quick as the sights realigned. I really like this pistol, i REALLY like this pistol. Very lightweight, but the lightweight scandium frame does not appear to add to the recoil. My friend is planning on carrying this 1911 for his concealed carry gun. I think it is a very good choice. I recommended to him that he add night sights to it , then buy an identical backup. We shot until it got dark, then we kept shooting. This thing truly lives up to it's name. It is a beast. We were shooting from 50yds and in and it light up the entire pistol range. I took out my 1,000,0000 candle watt spot light and it was nothing compared to The Beast. I actually think we could have been shooting from 100 yds. and easily seen the target. Very, very impressive. Just not very cost effective. We also turned off The Beast and shot ARs and pistols using tactical mounted flashlights. First up, another Surefire product. The M500A. I really like this light, it produced more than enough light to blind an attacker, light up the target visually, and was comfortable to activate and shoot on the ARs. The only problem with it, is that it cost Price: $515.00. I was really impressed with the X200, I know that Surefire now has a X300 out, but I will be scanning ebay and other sites for used X200s. They worked very well. From 30 yds. I could easily light up not just my target, but the one six feet from it. I need a couple of them. One for my bedroom night gun, and another for my carry weapon. It was so very compact, very comfortable to shoot and would be a must have if not for the price of $2,000. We shot it with a 42 rd. magazine, and it was very accurate and very comfortable to shoot. During SHOT a couple of weeks ago, my friend with the STG-556 actually visited with the owner of Steyr-Aug. He said he was very polite and spent a lot of time with him. He also stated that Steyr was going to be bringing the Steyr-Aug to the USA shortly. It will be made here so it will be available to the general public. The stock scope was removed and replaced with an ACOG. 1: 2: 4: The ACOG was a pleasure to shoot through. Of course it also is very expensive. I do think though, that it would be an expense worth making, for at least one of my ARs that is. When shooting the STG-556 with the ACOG, the reticle was very clear, and appeared to be illuminated. I am not sure if it was or not. I forgot my camera, or I would have had some pics. Rest assured we were well armed. Between the three of us we had 7 ARs, 1 AK, 3 XD .45s, 4 1911 .45s, the S&W 500, 870 Tactical Shotgun, O/U 12 gauge, Mossy 500, MSAR STG-556, Kel-Tec P3T and P32, and even a NAA .22 Mag. My buddy said he thought we could hold off Mexico.
Imho, the acog is worth the money. I have one with a Docter optic red dot mounted to the top of it which gives the best of cqb and long range ability. The reticle is illuminated in low light conditions, but uses no battery. The model I chose also employs a bullet drop compensator to 600 yds.
Sorry about the upload time, I forget that some people have slower connections. If a mod wants to cut those down to forum standards I won't complain. E.L. The transition from the scope to the red dot is completely natural and requires minimal movement to do so. That set up is sold that way by Trijicon, here's a link to it.
