Does anyone other than me like it? Made some up using canned blackeyed peas, chicken broth, bell peppers, garlic, onions, and chopped up honey ham. First try and it was plenty good! Next time I will cook peas from scratch add a little wine and have it with cornbread. Maybe jalapeno cornbread.
It's a staple around here when fresh Crowder peas are available and at new year's day. Jalapeño peppers are mandatory around here, as well as okra. The rest of the recipe is right on. On the side: plain cornbread or corn fritters. I've been thinking about green chili cheese grits but haven't gotten around to that yet.
I must admit, I never heard of it but it sure sounds good! I will have to ask the cook to research this... Corn bread and bacon is, of course, a real treat anytime, gives me the Biden drool just thinking about it.
Tried canned Hoppin John once. Tasted good but a bit spicier than I prefer. Blackeyed peas with bacon bits.... lovely!!
I have never cared for black-eyed peas myself until I tried this dish at a restaurant a few years ago. Liked it and finally got around making some. Wife didnt like it but others do.
Being a true Son Of The South, I was raised on Black Eyed Peas. I love 'em. Lima beans too. Or "Ham&MFers" for those who remember C-rats!
From an online article: " Lima Beans vs. Butter Beans Well, rest assured; the two are actually one in the same. There’s no difference between lima beans and butter beans, though sometimes they’re sold at different stages of maturity. As a matter of fact, our Large Lima Beans packaging actually states Butter Beans in parentheses, just to clarify. The younger green-hued beans are often called Green Baby Limas and are more tender than their larger counterparts. Despite that, all varieties come from the same plant. Interestingly, whether you prefer to call them lima beans or butter beans is a result of your own geographical traditions and how your family and friends refer to them." I like 'em all.
Total Redneckery to follow. Youngest uncles running buddy had a cousin nicknamed “Butter Beans”. Everyone in 1950-1960’s South Austin knew him by that name alone. He loved BB’s and cornbread so much it became his title. Jim
I like the little green ones, but I prefer the big white ones, cooked til they are nearly mushy, with a few ham hocks included, or thick-sliced ham! Real Southern Comfort Food! And a couple nice big cat head biscuits to sop up the bean gravy.
Grandma used to put collard greens in that ham and butter beans recipe. I make it every year after Thanksgiving with the leftovers
My Dad used turnips. I never liked collards, but ham and limas cooked in turnip greens was great stuff!
Grandma used to cook up them speckled Butterbeans ,,, seasoned with fat back or pigtails ,, loved it ,,
