Ok, So I was curious about AP rounds. AP means Armor Piercing. Im sure you all know that.
Now here is the kicker from me, I do not want to know how these things are made, nor how they are fired.I just want to know what the differences are between the standard barrel and an AP barrel.
I just read an article that said that in order for a fire arm to correctly use AP rounds, they must be used in a special barrel. How can this barrel be any different than from the one the firearm normally uses? Is it a little bit larger? if so wouldn't that also mean the receiver would have to be enlarged?

What about extra lube in the tube? Wouldn't that cake up on the round as it exited the barrel?

    What is the difference?
    Thanks guys

Who ever wrote that article does not know they are talking about. AP rounds have a steel core inside the projectile, the copper jacket is still soft enough to be safely fired from any standard barrel. Now there are some specilized AP rounds that are made from other types of exotic metals(depleated urainium) that incorporate a "Saboted Plastic Sleeve" but these rounds are tightly controlled by the military and are not availabe for civilian sale or use and are used exclusively in large bore weapons, ie 20mm and 30mm gun systems. Hope this clarified things a bit.

yes, it does. I thought it sounded weird, but I wanted to make sure.
    Thanks for doing so.
Maybe they were just trying to scare off people who would try.

One thing to think about here, is that AP rounds are typically heavier than ball, if I understand all I think I know. (Set me straight if I'm off base.) What this means is that a faster twist is needed to stabilize the bullet. This isn't necessarily a "custom" or "special" barrel in terms of size or manufacture, but is different.

Ghrit, We fired all type of rounds through our M2 50's and 240B's using the same barrels, When the Military addopted the ss109 round during the mid 80's, it was discovered that the twist in the M16A1 was not fast enough to stabilize the new ss109 round, which is why the M16A2-M4 rifle series has a much faster rifling twist. I Currently own a CETME and a DPMS LR308 AP4 Rifle firing the 7.62 Nato round. I have fired all types of military ammo through both of them and the accuracy basically stays the same no mater what kind of projectile is used.

Worlds largest gun show WANENMACHER'S Tulsa, OK. April 5-6 2008 Expo Square (Tulsa Fairgrounds)

Be in line by 7am so you can be in the building by 10am

Rows are 1/8 mile long and there are 100 rows; you won't get through the show in 1 day.

Because its so crowded, you only move as fast as the "herd".

It really doesn't matter how rare you think something is, you'll likely see 10 or more of them.

Don't ever plan on going back to get something ... it won't be there.

I would think AP with a steel core would be lighter than ball (lead core). Steel, being mainly composed of iron (Fe 26), is a lot lower on the Periodic Table than lead (Pb 82).

    Am I missing (misassuming) something...?

http://www.inetres.com/gp/military/infantry/rifle/7.62mmammo.htmlNV, There is really no difference in weight between Ball and AP projectiles, the difference is the length of the projectiles, It is length that is half of the equation in "Greenhills Formula" that determines rifling twist. The following is a Link to a chart of U.S. 7.62 Ammo used by the military today.

Route The link seems to be broken.

ok so the Webiste I looked it up on is:http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-Do-Armor-Piercing-Bullets-Work-56249.shtml

So if you see on the bottom:
"An interesting fact, that most people don't know about, is that it's not enough to have the armor-piercing bullet, you must also have a modified barrel, in order to take advantage of the bullet's ability."

There thats what I was talking about.

[BSf]That article is total B.S. antigun propaganda, do not give it 2 cents of your time. Regan was shot with a .22 LR projectile, not some AP round and teflon coated projectiles have never been proven to be AP. AP rounds can be bought and sold in the civilian market as long as they are not pistol ammunition. Like I stated before, that IDIOT does not know what he is talking about, he needs to take a class in Physics 101

Well its dangerous for me as The country I reside in makes it Illegal to own or possess any type of AP, Tracer, incindeary, explosive, sabot or other "non-standard hunting rounds"
I think AP is a good hunting round, how else does one take down a Grizzly with a hip shot. Their skulls and chests are thick enough to stop 12g slugs and .308 rounds. Your supposed to aim for the eyes on them. OR a single AP round to the skull would take care of them.
Common sense to an American, Criminal to a Canadian.
    Oh well.

You are 100% correct. I might add that just because the (small arms) rounds are AP they are not going to help you against a tank or even a lightly armored target for that matter. Talking about penetration of armor, I miss the LAW, and would love to have a case of them now that they are obsolete.

I worked at aerojet years ago and we made the DU 20 mm rounds from the powdered urainium all the way to cutting huge billets of the stuff to fit in the extruder, then to be coated with the special plastic. We also made sabots and 'other' special rounds. Deadly stuff!
