Coffee, do you store it?

The discussion about the coffee shots got me thinking about this. I am a coffee drinker. It is less about being hooked on it than it is readily available at work. Don't get me wrong, I am hooked on it. If I don't drink any on a long weekend, I get the caffeine headaches to prove it.

But I'm curious if you folks have it in your stores. Do you have a lot of it to last you years, or do you feel you will ween yourself off of it over a short period or time?

If you store it, do you store beans or grounds? Do you store green coffee beans and roast it yourself? Green beans have a really long shelf life.

    Just curious

I only keep 3 or for plastic cans, if I were to store it I would use the vaccum packed bags everything I've read it lasts much longer. I like the plastic as it makes good feed measure and egg collectors along with great for screws and bolts as they don't rust.

I have a dozen #10 cans of some cheap, ground stuff I found at a clearance store one time. It and about 200 lbs of whole, roasted beans are in the crawl space.

I have the beans in different sized amounts and vacuum packed. Some is for barter and some is for use. I have a (Forget the name) manual grain grinder that would double as a coffee bean mill. For the seriously caffeine addicts, I've heard that you can get the same effect by just eating a small handful of coffee beans instead of going through the hassles of the rest of the ritual.

As far as shelf life? I'd bet old stale coffee is better than hot water. Vac packers seem to make everything last a long long time. Mine is all stored in an environment that never goes above 60 not below 40 degrees.

I also have ~1000 assorted tea bags in vac pack storage as well.

We keep some around, mainly for when family members come to visit. The wife and I don't drink much coffee. So what we keep stays in the freezer, but we have some in the "pantry", figure it'd serve as a type of comfort food should we need it. Also, as said above, I'd rather have coffee than hot water.

Interesting that nobody has said they store un-roasted beans. Once it is roasted, coffee goes stale pretty quickly. But un-roasted lasts many years.

Believe it or not I have a couple of large jars of instant. We have some tea bags but I hadn't thought of storing them so I guess it's off to the discount to get some. I had a jar of instant that I bought when I lived alone for those just in case days that I didn't have time to make coffee... That never happened. I opened it last year and tried some for kicks and grins. It wasn't bad, as far as instant goes. So since it was about 8 years old and was decent I picked up 4 large jars.
    Take care Be safe Poacher.

We just drink chicory coffee so it grows every year. It's kind of invasive so no worries about running out anytime soon. [beer]

Don't like the thought of running out and am sure others would want it too....Like melbo, I have tea bags too..

And yes, you can eat the beans if you need to....One guy I know eats one before going in to work every day ...he swears it is the greatest breath freshener........uh..Yeah. Coffee breath.

The beans, especialy espreso beans, are great covered in chocolate. We have one of the large cans but no more coffee than we drink, unless it was used to entertain or for barter, that would be a year or 2 supply.

I have several of the vac bricks of Folgers stored. I only have a cup or two each morning, so it would last awhile, after "The Day".
I need to store more sugar and creamer though.

Yep store a couple months supply mostly to wean myself off after SHTF, but as possible barter item too. Besides, I buy when the price is low and use when the price is high so save money over the long run by stocking up when cheap.

Anybody have experience with storing beans and grinding as needed? I usually buy beans, grind at the store, and store in the freezer.

I've got one instant packet in each MRE, and several cans of instant stored up, not to mention the fact that I'm constantly in the process of drinking a gallon of grind.

I grind beans every morning. You can buy them in vacuum sealed bags etc. (like from Duncan Donuts). Just keep in mind that post SHTF you'll need a non-electric grinder.

I consider coffee to be the essence of survival. Taking away the coffee would be like the 'Tea Party' all over again. [coffee2]
