Some of our members leave for a while and I do not know when they may return. Given the fact this thread is almost 10 years old, it's safe to say you are better off searching online. I performed a search for you and found pretty much everything... You can buy everything here except steel canteens: Army Navy Outdoors | Military Surplus Store Rothco steel canteen: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B12HSMY/?tag=survivalmonke-20 Goetland steel canteen kit: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B12HSMY/?tag=survivalmonke-20
I'd travel around and visit all the Army/Navy supply shops and it got to the point where some of them knew me pretty well. There's a particularly large one just off the Cape, just as you cross the bridge back to mainland Massachusetts and I would always stop in there on my way through. Back in the "pre-internet" days, this was the way. Of course the internet was around a long time, but it really didn't become an e-commerce tool until just before the 2000's time frame...I'm thinking Ebay was at the forefront.
Years ago, I purchased some French Army canteens, good quality and the opening is much larger than the US Army canteens. Easier to clean, fill and drink from. I gave one to my 8-year-old great-nephew, he thinks it's COOL!
One of my favorite milsurp cooking outfits is the East German cookpot set I picked up many years back at my local Army/Navy Store. I used a nylon rifle sling to make the securing strap, similar to the WWII German leather strap. It's worked well on my motorcycle camping trips. I also rigged up a two-bag tank pannier system to carry a couple GI canteens, a stainless canteen cup in one and the stove in the other. I could have my meal (Mountain House usually, sometimes an MRE Entree) heated up and ready by the time my riding buddy got his cantankerous "Whisperlite" alcohol stove running.
Yep. cup and mess kit always bring back memories of 3 "garbage cans" of water. Wipe kits out. swish in 1 st can of soapy water, lye soap of course. rinse in second can, shake dry, and rinse in 3 rd can. Everyone got the sh*** until you got used to the soap. Put handle of mess kit fry pan thru ring in plate and that allowed you to hold them while swishing. If available, heated water in can with a steam hose, if not had a large stove that burned gasoline that heated pots of water that were poured into cans. Almost 70 years ago so its a little difficult to remember what was used in field kitchens for stoves. Guess they were dangerous as us troops in line just saw them in background. Thank you, loved looking at pictures and stirred up memories to go look for more.
