The US has a massive number of bases/facilities that date from WWII. I suspect that pressure to cut the military budget will be next on the agenda. Cutting a base will provide both quick savings and long-term savings as well. Or so it is assumed. Have any suggestions? (McChord Air Museum - History of Larson AFB, WA) Sister base to Fairchild AFB, Larson AFB was closed in 1966. Life went on locally. **** Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC)[1][2] was a process[3] by a United States federal government commission[4] to increase the efficiency of the United States Department of Defense by coordinating the realignment and closure of military installations following the end of the Cold War. Over 350 installations have been closed in five BRAC rounds: 1988, 1991, 1993, 1995, and 2005. These five BRAC rounds constitute a combined savings of $12 billion annually. 2005 was 20 years ago, so the time is ripe for another thrash...
Domestic bases should not be touched --all foreign bases need to be closed first or we get reimbursed for all expenses protecting other nations.
I would LEAVE the Air Force bases intact, while closing all the others that are not used or needed! Re-purpose existing Air Bases into either combined facilities like JBLM, or diverse aviation assets to those bases and transfer them to the service that operates them, think NAVAL aviation diversified to former air bases to make them that much harder to take out!
I would not be surprised to see some alignment in Europe but in all honesty, I don't think they can chop much more over there. Also, Trump said we are remaining in Europe so... I can't think of any CONUS bases that would be a benefit to close and Trump is very pro military so...I'm don't think we'll see base closures, but everything is on the table so...
@Zimmy You know, I never considered this, but it does make some sense. I mean, North Korea has nukes, right, and if South Korea has nukes, then there is no way the North is going to try to invade ever again. Maybe you miss your calling, Zimmy, and you should work for the State Department. LOL!
The Air force is...the Air Force. The Army has an Air Force The Navy has an Air force The Marines have both an Air Force and a Navy (Gator Navy) The Space Force is too new to have built any empires. So, yeah, plenty of room to cut.
