    Meh

    I've read this multiple times:
Nuclear War Survival Skills - Wikipedia
-- free as it was funded by the FedGov, no copyright.
"One would have to be incredibly unlucky to not survive a nuclear war" C Kearny in this book.
Best to ignore the Baba Yaga crap (nuke winter) and focus on the real problems, lack/end of imported food (like imported from KS) , the loss of utilities and medical care/advanced medicine.

Life in a pre-cheap oil period is not going to be fun - short, hard and ugly, yes. But if you don't take some minimal precautions, the aftereffects of a nuke exchange is the thing that kills you.

Most of what is published about nuke war is rubbish, disinformation or lunatic raving. You are free to believe what you want, I'll take a hard pass.

My biggest fear, not so much Nuclear winter, it's the complete breakdown of everything, nobody to run vital things like the Hydro electric installations, so all the dams will over top and fail. All sorts of other stuff will have serious effects, from fall out, to combination areas and shifting radiation making food and drinking water super hard to come by.

Nope, I got a big boat, 3+ years of provisions on board, enough fuel that if we are careful, we can go that full 3 years, and have plans to get fuel to ensure we have adequate supplies. Our engines are the latest is hyper fuel efficient, way better then they should be, but that's why We bought THIS boat in the first place and then did all the work to make it even better. With that, we can go anywhere we need, and we have safety from pretty much any threat, unless it's pirates or some rogue Navy or serious militant group, and we can get that tub up to a speed that would make us hard to catch if we needed to, and with other capabilities, damn near impossible to stop and board. BTW, she has a Baltic Class 2B ice rating, with seriously reinforced bow and stern, so we can run and hide in places most others cannot follow, and we have several strategically located hiding spots where we know we will not have troubles. If someone wants us bad enough, its gonna cost them big time, hopefully more then they are willing to spend, and THAT is the ultimate survival plan, simply not being where bad things are likely to happen!

IF I may expand a bit - in doing my deep dive due diligence, as I started a family, I wanted a safer(er) for just this kind of societal collapse.

Delta, Utah won. Or rather, Utah won.
Located in the wind shadow of Mt Wilson, even if the entire West coast got pasted, the area around Delta would have 'less than' a 2% chance of measurable fallout.
The town had (at the time of my survey) had an independent hospital with its own lab, xray center etc. Hospital is still there, now part of a huge MedCorp.

The Country has a gravity fed irrigation system. Manually operated for decades, so lots of corporate knowledge on irrigation. Still does.

At the time, a heavy Mormon presence - so societal stability was assumed.

The are multiple oil wells and refineries just north of the county
Lots of coal to be had, both locally and in-state
Lots of ore (Iron County is just South of Delta. and on and on.

We sold our land about 4 years ago. The town has been overrun with illegals, with the drugs, crime and gang activity that comes with.

The energy sector (big ass power plant and miles and miles of solar and wind - (shipped to Calif) now makes the AO at least a minimal target. So, we split.

Post nuke, much of the objectional shit will go away, the only threat after that is an invasion of Califlowers. Well, worse than now.

This place is still a deep fallback if we split from AK - AK is just plain unsustainable without massive inputs from the L48.

There are other places, even now, that might be worth a look.

No place is perfect, and even a 'perfect' place will change in 30 years. We left the L48 in 1991, and have yet to go back - except to visit.

You might enjoy a visit here - TriloBoat Talk: 2022
He talks of fiords - deep and level bottoms for drying out. Has more than a few guerilla gardens planted and so on. I no longer have a boat, but this makes for a fun read.

When I first retired, we looked at all sorts of places, Alaska would have won out over all the others except what you just pointed out, the massive reliance of the lower 48 for even the most basics of survival, and if you have or likely will have any medical need, fugheddaboutit! We ended up near Divide Colorado, it's far enough away from most crap, and the altitude helps keep the rest of the crap from flowing up the passes, so that's about as good as one could want. The major issue is the states hard core power shift to the Left, it's made it almost unlivable, we only have this small area of autonomy from the state and it's desires for absolute communisian, and it won't last while things are still functioning. After the "Big Juan" that will change, and the state and all the bad will dry up and fade away, till then, it's everyone for themselves. The plan has always been to build this redoubt so my son's have a place to hold up and be as safe as they can be till things start to normalize, while the wife and I split for the oceans and disappear for a while, with nobody on the ranch, there is no target, so I only squatters ( highly unlikely) as my oldest is only a few hours hard days drive from Texas, while the youngest is several days hard sailing north to Sitka where we can collect him and then sail around slow till things calm down enough. The ranch would serve as the perfect long term redoubt, just got to survive long enough to make it back here! If it's only a civil war, we stay put and do what needs doing, mostly living like normal and avoiding problem areas, as long as they don't come up the passes and bring the fight to us, we got it covered. If China gets frisky enough, we can boogey West, jump on the boat and disappear super quick like, it's the Nukes we have to deal with and the immediate aftermath, and we got that planned out!
