A few years ago, I had to renew my driver's license and decided to get a Real ID. I went online and found out what documents I would need, collected them and went to the State Troopers office, only to have them tell me that I had the wrong documents. So, I got a regular driver's license and renewed my U.S. Passport. F*ck'em I got a U.S. Passport that will allow me to go ANYWHERE in the world, I don't need no stinking Real ID!

I have a real ID. I got it last driver license renewal in 2021. I guess I haven't paid much attention to all the hoopla about it. Yeah, they asked for documents, which I supplied, but since I have a passport - well - I got it anyway just to comply with the law (Real I.D Act, 2005).

I guess it is to stop states from issuing driver licenses to illegal immigrants... so now the illegals drive without a license. LOL! However, driving without a license is breaking the law so at that point the arresting officer has 'cause' to dig deeper and see if the individual is indeed an illegal. Anyway, that's how I justify it... and I suppose when I get my renewal next year I will have to show documents again...

There is so much hype around here to get the "real id" it's crazy. Local DMV has a wait line going around the building and the cars are parked on the street blocking traffic.
I got my Real ID when my wife scheduled her's back in March. Wasn't much to it, in my opinion. Some documents and wait like usual.
Don't plan on flying anytime soon and I still need to renew my passport.

There was talk about federal installations, that I was driving through on a regular basis, requiring the Real ID for base vehicle registration. So I got one. Soon after that vehicle registration aboard base, at least for retirees who no longer resided on base, went extinct. They said it was a security issue. With our DOD stickers on the windshield it made us a target of terrorists. Then they used manpower issues to justify closure of the two gates at either end of NC 172 that traversed the base. This after NC DOT had built a 13.2 million dollar high rise bridge from the base to Sneads Ferry over the New River in 1992. If that wasn't bad enough, now I'm hearing that a DOD issued ID or Passport will serve as well as the Real ID anyway.

I get a laugh out of the base thinking they shut down civilian travel from Sneads Ferry through the base. They don't see civilian travel through the base. There's a difference. I hunt the woods on both ends and every time they extend a fence, a new trail pops up just beyond it. Couple hundred yards and you're on the black-top. No MP's out there. They figure both gates are closed, why bother. These boys are masters of camouflage, and if you aren't standing in just the right place, looking at just the right angle, you'd never see where they had passed. Even when the gates were open and the MP's were watching them approach they'd lose sight of them in a valley before they got to the gate, and they'd never see them again.

I have not got a "Real ID" and have zero plans to do so. I think the DMV doesn't need to have all of the documents required for it. It's not their business in my opinion. The Real ID also qualifies for squat with any international travel or most ID purposes overseas. I have a passport and have had one for many years now. I could care less if I have to show it for domestic or international travel.

Not having a Real or Star ID might just keep me from being audited by the IRS and being called to serve on a Federal Grand Jury. No ID means that I can't enter the building!

While you have some very good and valid points there I would encourage you to serve on those juries. You never know what you may have a say so in. Juries all need good people that make rational decisions instead of just going with the garbage and spin most attorneys put out there.

So SIX years ago when they SAID we would need a "real ID" I gathered all the documents (which was a PAIN because being a woman who was married, my ID didn't match my birth certificate, so I had to get a copy of my marriage license which I no longer had because I'm divorced). If I have to produce all that AGAIN this year because I'm guessing the state of Kansas will have lost it, they can FORGET it.

I took my passport along just in case when I renewed. They said my license was already good-to-go, so I didn’t need anything.
