I was fortunate to grow up at a time before The Oakland County Child Killer was snatching children in 1976-77. My childhood in Detroit and later in Oakland County was completely carefree and wild. My kids grew up the same way, and I'll see that my Grandchildren have the same freedom. I think the one thing that the kids and I had in common was that when we were outside playing, we were always with all the neighborhood kids. We had strength in numbers.

I was never a fan of hitchhiking as a form of travel. Train (freight train) travel had been a fascination as a child, but there were always dangers there. Probably a good thing I chose a bicycle. I could be selective about where I stayed at night, always had a reasonably predictable route and could stop and go as I pleased. Even today when I travel and stay in hotels I walk the perimeter looking for cozy camping spots and locating water and bathrooms that are accessible without a key card.

 

That has the makings of an EPIC night!
