Implication - Pilots are really just big kids who got older, but never actually grew up.

 

I didn't become a pilot so I grew up.

 

I wrenched on them, so that the Big Kids could keep flying.

 

I spent hours dialing Headquarters Marine Corps on one of these. (They probably still communicate via Fax machine) One day I got through after a long series of busy signals and somebody said "Lunch time" and hung up. I never wanted to get in my car and go hunt somebody down so bad in my whole life.

I learned techniques for answering the phone at work so we had the option to just hang up.
"Master Gunnery Sergeant gRrrffnmmnmmnnmm, how can I help you?" Answering a military phone the speaker would always say who they were, and then why they called. If you hung up and they called back screaming "Do you know WHO I AM?!" the Master Gunny would just ask, "Do you know who I am?" and hang up again, knowing that they couldn't make any sense out of the assorted mumbles he'd used when identifying himeslf.
