i dont think 223 meets the minimum bullet weight/ energy to legally hunt large game with,,, having said that black tail deer and caribou, wolf are the only things up here id use it for. im sure every state is different.
huh,,,,, must have changed now it is center fire. nothing about minimum caliber or weight in ak. i remember reading caliber and bullet weight minimums but i dont see anything like that now. they recommend bullet types and shot placement. so news to me. i wouldn't shoot a moose or bear with 300 blk,, but i guess you can. shot placement is of course #1. apparently guys with 375 mag and such were missing alot. the regs say 308 and 30/06 are better because they are more accurate, less recoil. personally i like my 300 win mag at less then 300yd , thats what its for and i can group them well. im thinking the 6mm, 6.8 ect has changed the game. along with better expanding proj. apparently i was wrong. in ak anyway. check your state tempstar!
Don't forget, the Grand Daddy of them all, the mighty 6.5X55 Swede is STILL killing Moose and Rheindeer to this day, nobody ever told anyone it was too small, or didn't pack enough punch to get the job done! I wouldn't try taking one of our big Elk with one, but deer is a no brainer up here in the high Velds of Colorado! Grew up with a kid that killed everything with his little .243 Winchester M-70 that his grand dad gave him when he turned 12, and I know another dude that still carries a 7MM/08 that was his first rifle, both have taken some pretty good sized swamp donkeys, never an issue! Won't find me doing that though, for them bigguns, it's .30/06 or .338 Win Mag!
They say a 7mm/08 is the finest elk cartridge on the planet. Jack o connor killed everything with a .270, i love a .270. my uncle loved a .270 but said he switched to a 06 cause "we got some big deer here in kansas, wanted a little more knockdown." In the words of the late paul harrel, you be the judge.
Efficiency in a very short barrel, which makes it great for a harder hitting sub gun. 300 BO loses very little velocity per inch as you shorten the barrel. Once you get below about 12.5" 5.56/.223 is more show than go and the resulting fireball isn't exactly stealthy. When I started looking at a 6" folding bag gun I ran the numbers and SS 300 BO is better than 5.56 by a wide margin. Also consider barrel and silencer wear. At 14.5" and above it's 5.56 every day and twice on Sundays unless you are going for subsonic quiet.
One of my brothers got my Dad's 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser. and I'd give my eye teeth for it, but it is not to be.
What ya really need: Choose your own Tikka rifle from a variety of innovative models You know i'm a YUGE fan of Tikka, they got the whole accuracy thing locked down, their barrels are without equal, and that action, silky smooth! Wife rocks an older Tikka in .243 win, and I have my Super Varmint in .30/06 Would LOVE to have this rifle, a match made in heaven if ya was to ax me!
YUP! The differences really start to show at ranges under around 300 meters, the .300 hits so much harder than any of the 5.56, as well as most pistol rounds out of a carbine, and even better, it suppresses so much easier then most every other caliber ( except some pistol rounds) even as ranges getting out there, the .300 is also quite accurate, so they could be used for counter sniper/patrol duty if needed! They also cycle nearly flawlessly in semi autos like the AR, even suppressed, so it's a hands down winner! There ARE other carbine rounds that can hit much harder, but they are not as common or easy to get, even components can be tricky, so the .300 makes the most sense!
From the Firearmwiki This will give you a starting comparison of the differences. I'll get the bullet coefficients later and run them through the BJM ballistics calculator running it out to at least 300 yards. Nominal 16" to 7" barrel loss and retention It's important to factor in bullet performance at velocity. How slow before that 55grain XM193 doesn't fragment or the M855 stays an unexpanded monolith. Ditto for the 300 BO loads. This is what really sets useful distance.
Im just curious as it seems speed in the factor when it comes to armor. Dunno if the lighter slightly faster 5.56 will do better or not.
XM193 has a frangible bullet where the M855 is designed to penetrate. If armor is your main concern go with a longer barrel and M855, though the 77gr OTP is much better all around.
300BO, is CQB option low flash and sound signature in a small package. 5.56 in a similar package while can be done, huge blast (sound and light) not as stealthy. 2 different purposes. running around your house or postage stamp sized yard in town during the troubles beginning to start .. pick the 300BO. It's crazy everywhere and everyone is shooting .. yeah, bump it up to 5.56 with an 11-16 inch barrel and push them back. Y'all have cleared out to 200 meters and now they are onese twoses floating out around 500 meters, swap the upper for a 20" HBAR and a nice optic or grab the hunting rifle. Also, the pelvic crease typically has no armor and insta-down granted once they are on the ground ya can make CNS finale. Even if you can't get the second shot .. not to long before they ain't going to be shooting back.
I run supressed reguardless of what i am running haha. The tinnitus is terrible from pre supression days.
