I read that later during filming of Gilligan's Island, Dawn Wells said she and the rest of the cast had idea of Johnson's military service and heroism. I recall seeing him in a lot of cowboy western TV shows before his Gilligan's Island time. He, like Deforrest Kelly, James Doohan, Robert Wilke, etc. were popular character actors.
