Hey Hot Diggity the guy operating that 110hp Case looks like my former neighbor George Hedkey. He had the worlds most complete Privately owned Case steam engine collection.

It appears maybe not a training issue but maybe a design defect. Here is more detail:

Neat little fact. Despite the Chi-Chi-Chinaman and little one in the photo, I know for a fact this took place in Prague on the Charles Bridge.

One of my favorite places in the whole world.

Yeah...allegedly, the Airman used a Safariland holster with a weapon light? Even so, none of this matters. I truly do not believe this is a case of faulty manufacturing. Why does none of this matter? Because EVERY military soldier should be clearing their weapons BEFORE entering any TOC, FOB, COP, or compound. Period. That's it. Over and out. The fact that this goober had a live round in his gun when he slapped it down on the table...says everything I need to know.

    Excellent info. Tragic.

Investigation may find fault with the holster or firearm, but I see an issue with the guard SOP that would've made this tragedy avoidable.

This goes way back. We had clearing barrels on any post that was armed with a pistol. 55 gallon drums full of sand with a screen over the top to keep gum and cigarette butts out. When you were relieved of duty you would stand in front of the clearing barrels, that was usually in the corner of two concrete block walls, draw your pistol from the holster, remove the magazine, clear the round from the chamber (retrieve the round from the deck) point your now unloaded firearm into the center of the sand in the barrel, drop the slide and pull the trigger. Then, and only then could you holster the firearm and put the loose round back in the magazine.

Only once did I ever hear of the sand getting disturbed in USMC pistol clearing barrel, and I was in diapers when it happened. My old buddy Gary told me that they had a Navy Lieutenant as Officer of the day in the Philippines, and when he tried to turn in a loaded pistol to the armory he was asked to step down to the end of the passageway and clear the pistol in the clearing barrel. You guessed it. He fired all seven rounds into the barrel before returning to the armory window to turn in the pistol.

SOP aside….I carry a loaded sidearm regularly. It is REQUIRED (by regulation) to be loaded with a round chambered. I do not expect it to go off of if I remove my holster in my office to take a dump. I also do not have to remove and clear it to enter my office. SIG are at fault here and all the rest is peripheral to that.
