I grew up with one of those in my back yard.

 

ours was round --still use ours on sun days sun costs nothing

 

Mine is still in my back yard. Mom used it from when we moved to this property in 1964 until her health began failing in the 2000s. I now live here, after inheriting the property on her death, but I don't use the "solar drier" either. Again, health issues. Whoever gets this property after I'm gone will have it available.

Mom got a new improved solar dryer when the local cheese factory recored their boiler and dad got some of the old fire tubes and welded them into the classical pattern. The hole they were in was about 4 feet deep and full of concrete. Put them in about 1950 and my brother's wife was still using them in 2015 when I visited. Still a weird color as they were and are painted with zinc chromide paint to fight rust, 70 years for a recycled post isn't too bad. Ropes are replaced often as wire stains clothes, don't know about al wire.
