I've seen videos of guys doing this. I used to do it with the strut down inside a (dry) benjo ditch. That left only up as the direction things could go wrong, and if the spring went straight in line with the concrete sides and bottom of the ditch the worst that could happen would be that I might have to move some grating to recover all the hardware. We didn't have a spring compressor, so the spring went under the differential of a jacked up car and was compressed when we let it down. Then we'd crawl under the car and tie the spring in the compressed position with coat hangers. Assembly was very carefully done back in the benjo ditch, then the wires were cut and the spring tension released. Yes, it's as dicey as it sounds.

I can sure identify with this. I have what my doctor calls "progressively deteriorating disks". Bummer. Makes standing more than a few minutes or walking very much rather painful.

Now that's one I never wanted to see.
Used to listen to his program years ago.
He was a very wise man. The best advice I ever heard from him, and I've remembered it for over 30 years, pertains to teenagers:

    Just get them through it!
