The first computer I had at work was during my last tour from 1996-99. I remember joking about my first computer having a seven inch screen. I had a dot matrix printer. I could communicate via e-mail, and type reports, but not much else. Brings back lots of memories.

When I first took over my new job as maintenance officer I would pick one nonsense report per week that I would intentionally not submit. If nobody came looking for the report, it never got submitted again. After a few weeks I had no reports to submit. I think they were all busy-work created by my predecessor so he didn't have time to PT. I know they kept him too busy to create a turn-over folder. When I finally found a binder marked "Turnover Folder" it had a single piece of paper from a yellow legal pad inside with the scribbled heading "Turnover Folder." Then it stated to become clearer. He had stood behind me one day, reading over my shoulder, and told me that the word thoroughly, which he could only point to, and didn't dare try to pronounce... "Wasn't a word." He was from what I hope was the last generation of functionally illiterate Marines. I know my replacement had a smooth transition, a complete Turnover and Desktop Procedures file, no overweight Marines in the platoon and no nonsense reports that needed to be submitted. ;)

I ran across this a little while ago ,, this is a few questions on math and other subjects from 1899 ,,, it's kind of hard to read it ,, you'll have to expand it to read it ,, but it gets blurry when try to zoom in. Hope you can make it out.
But if there's ever been any proof of the comment,, " the dumbing down of America " ,, this is it. I hope you're able to see this . When you mentioned " illiteracy " ,, I thought of this ,,,

My first work computer, when I started as a Computer Operator 1 (glorified print and computer batch job runner) on evening shift at Florida Dept. Of Education in 1990, was a Dell PC with Win95. In 2001 I bought myself a used/refurbed PC from a work buddy who bought surplus stuff from state auctions. It too had Win95. o_O

I saw #1 Son do that on Camp Lejeune. He was trying to suck wind like a guppy for a bit.

In my neighborhood as a kid, Granny Macreynolds often made lunch for us. She was the grandmother of two neighbor kids who also went to our school. Their Dad had served in the US Navy aboard the USS North Carolina.
