I'm looking to do a build I acquired a 10/22 lower and found it and thought it would be a nice build to do. All laws and rules are going to be followed so no worries about that.

What I'm wanting to do is build a 10/22 I'm not looking to make it a sniper rifle or anything like that I would like threaded barrel's!

What I'm looking for advice for are other items I'm going to have to buy. I'm interested in what you all feel is the best trigger system option out there is?.

Custom bolt vs factory? I'm most interested in hearing about this.
I'm looking for more of a rugged weapon then Something that is picky.

You mean you have a receiver? That'd be the top, serialized part. The part that you fill out the 4473 for. Or are you making a homebuilt receiver?

Can't go wrong with Volquartsen trigger, or anything else.

10/22 bolt is a hunk of steel. Custom bolts are polished hunks of steel with pretty handles. Or light weight voodoo magic that require different springs to make them work like they were heavier.
I've put a couple hundred thousand rounds through my oldest 10/22. The receiver is so worn that all the pins just fall out when it's removed from the stock. Everything in the bolt and trigger group are original except the auto bolt release and magazine release.

Keep your magazines clean and correctly tensioned and they will last a lifetime.

Barrel and trigger make a huge difference, followed be ergonomics. I hate factory bolt and magazine releases. I change them first. Auto bolt release is a drop in part. Slightly extended mag release with no sharp edges works for me with cold hands.

If you thread the barrel for a suppressor, remember the sights are right above the bore. Might need something taller to see over anything screwed onto the barrel.

I like a 1/4" thick steel butt plate and steel barrel band with a sling swivel. Slight addition in weight and length feel right to me, and steel isn't likely to ever break like aluminum or plastic. I have smashed stuff with the butt plate. It's merciless.

Caution: I've never built a 10/22 and the only one I have I bought in the late 1980's and it has no mods. I have assembled several AR-15's to meet specific purposes that also meed criteria like balance directly over the mag well, high reliability, and precision better than needed for the purpose.

On a firearm I like to decide what I want to do with it before thinking about how I want to build it out. I gather you are looking for better accuracy than an out of the box 10/22 and you wanted to use a silencer. What exactly do you want to use this rifle for? Range toy? Truck gun? Survival? Plinking on the back 40? Killing sage rats or other varmints? All around jack of all trades and master of none?

Knowing what it's going to be used for will dictate design decisions.

One thing I will say is that if you are using a scope get one designed for a 22 or get one with an adjustable parallax that goes to 50 or 60 yards. That alone will help your accuracy. Center fire scopes are optimized for 100 yards so when you shoot at normal rim fire distances with one of those the target will shift in the sight as you move your eye. Parallax is the only difference between a rim fire and a center fire scope. Cyclops on Youtube has a great video that demonstrates that.

I'll add that Faxon makes very good barrels and they do make them for the 10/22 with threads. This is one case where button formed is better than CHF. Rim fire cartridges don't cause enough wear that you would notice the difference in your lifetime. Button formed barrels typically have higher tolerances so are generally more accurate.

I's also opt for a metal trigger guard over the new plastic ones if you can find one. That's just a personal preference. I can take a synthetic stock but I don't like synthetic parts on a long gun.

Hopefully someone will reply with more and better information, and I hope you do a build thread.

I too have a mid 80's vintage 10/22, no plastic. Sometime in the late 90's I bought a 16" threaded barrel from Ebay and installed it along with a folding stock from Sportsman's guide. Apparently it made for the right combo and I have put rounds through the same hole many times at 50 yards. I have a cheap 3x9 Bushnell scope and shoot Remington sub-sonic for the best accuracy, it loves those rounds. All of the guts are stock Ruger and my buddy who has one tricked out with damn near everything you can buy aftermarket wants to trade but I won't.
Don't believe the hype about the gun needing aftermarket parts to be a shooter. With a good upper receiver, a decent barrel (You may already have one) and most importantly ammo that the gun likes, you can have a great rifle without a lot of money invested.

I have spent a lot of money rebuilding my Ruger 10/22. When I was a kid, these rifles ran flawlessly but now...totally different and there are some quality control problems. If you can get your hands on one of the older Ruger 10/22 then scoop it up! You got yourself a reliable .22 that will shoot anything you put in it accurately and flawlessly. The new ones...maybe.

Reference my new one... The stock trigger sucks, way too heavy, must have been 8+pounds, made me jerk trigger at times. My ejector also sucked, constantly got FTE and FTF. The stock was made for a youth and as a man, I never felt comfortable with it, like a damn BB gun. I changed all of these and much more not because I wanted a super-duty rifle but because I wanted to be able to hit a prairie dog head consistently on the property and make the gun reliable.

@hot diggity suggestion of Volquartsen is a good one and I use their 'Auto Bolt Release' which I would recommend but Kidd makes an excellent one also. All the rest of my upgrades are Kidd. These are the two vendors I would use, Kidd and Volquartsen.
Overall, I think I would choose Kidd because he specializes only in the 10/22 and makes really high-quality gear and customer support is excellent. Yeah, I like him.

Anyway, my recommendations and what I have changed are:
KIDD trigger - either go the drop-in unit (expensive) or just the parts called 'Trigger Job' (cheaper)
    KIDD Bolt Buffer
KIDD Magazine Latch Plunger Stainless Steel (no more plastic plunger holding mag in place)
KIDD Extractor (much better than standard extractor)
KIDD Auto Bolt Release (or Volquartsen...I'd probably go with the Kidd now as so impress with his quality)
KIDD Guide Rod & Spring Kit + Charging handle (not necessary but nice...Or get the kit, Silver Viton Charging Assembly)
KIDD Magazine Release Levers (not necessary but nice improvement)
KIDD Threaded Receiver Pins (so the damn pins won't simply fall out when you're working on it)
The stock I put on mine is the Magpul X-22 Hunter (easy to install and feel really good)

I think that is it...probably something I missed but... I probably should change the bolt but tired of messing with it and it does the job now. Some are necessary and some are personal choice but at least I hit what I aim at now, and it shoots and feeds every time.

All-in-all if I knew then what I know now I would get the CZ 457 because I don't need a semi for prairie dogs for you miss and they are gone. The 10/22 is nice for plinking but other than that I am not a fan.

the original 10/22 was/is pretty rugged as it's shipped. Take off any burrs and sharp edges and a quick polish ... you are GTG for the long haul.

Worst thing about a stock 10/22 imo is the trigger. Ruger's BX trigger pack is pretty good for the money (ought to be what comes in them from the factory). Beyond that I can't choot good enough to justify any of the more expensive stuff (especially on the takedown), lol.

I have a stainless takedown that the SBR paperwork just came back on. I plan to put that Magpul X-22 Backpacker furniture on it, with the accompanying forward optic mount, and a LER scope. I have an 8" threaded bbl on the way that will host the same Liberty Constitution suppressor that I use on my AR. I've got an extra X-22 Backpacker fore end to put on the original bbl. Then I can swap back to that to save a little space or plink with iron sights.

I think it would also be cool to get a wood stock and cut and mill it to work with the takedown, but I think the X-22 thinger will be more practical for my purposes even if it is ugly as sin heh.

Yeah, I totally agree. Why in the hell hasn't Ruger made that BX trigger stock and dumped that garbage currently in their 10/22...silly question because we know why: $$$

So I learned something. I was wondering why some we're complaining about the 10/22. I had one as a kid and ran thousands of rounds through it flawlessly. And it was hell on accurate.
But seems the quality has gone downhill on newer models. That's a shame.
