"Blue UAS are drones approved by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) for use by the federal government. (UAS = Uncrewed Aerial Systems—or, in other words, drones.)"

maybe use a vpn to view this. this is a list of 10 american made drones approved by dod for use by american military. i think most will sell to civilians but i expect the prices will be high. this site is a drone school for faa approved license and professional use.

Biggest point seems to be what parts are in it so that there is no backdoor in the electronics or programing to allow some one else, say China for an example, to take control of one if used in real world. Need to be USA or at least checked out well. Loved that convert a plane. Launch and recover vertical, but fly as well. 2 hours flight time in a small package.

Another drone mentioned is teathered. That means it can be put up like a ballon and stay in one place with a wire to the ground for power for many hours. A hand launched observation tower that can be moved. Can see a lot of uses for something like that with a thermal camera. Hadn't really thought about that. Sort of an up periscope function on land.

And at least one may have real world experience in the Ukraine and has a kill type drone with about a 4 pound payload.

Building unmanned superiority. At scale. In America.

Interesting post and being milspec I am certain very pricey. Nice to see what is out there and at least the disclosed state of the art. If you get to following the references, it is a very deep and thought provoking rabbit hole in what the Ukraine war is doing to our concept of how wars can be fought. IED's from above diving into your foxhole kind of changes things. Add a laser targeting mode and you can drop anything from a mortar shell to a 2000 pound bomb on a target, even moving, with an error of a couple feet.

Or how about raising or lowering an antenna so that instead of having a fixed antenna that's 30 feet in the air you could have 150 feet or more in an emergency. Probably would need a bit more tech to get rid of the heavy cable, use fiber instead, but not impossible to do. 'Height is Might' in the antenna world. Yeah, there could be a load of things one could do with something like this. Cool stuff!

Mean roadside bombs, what ever they call them now. I know of a couple cases where an IUD would of saved a lot of trouble however to every one involved..

Never really thought about what the new drones can do. 90 min flight times and days in hover. 100 mph in winged flight, camera's. IR or thermal. Antenna's, beyond line of sight radio, laser targeting, 20 pound payloads, GPS homing ect. Can get one to play with on from Walmart or Amazon for about $100 that really isn't a toy and for a couple hundred more, less than the price of a good scope, get one with a loiter time of 90 minutes and a camera broadcasting back info.

Ah, unless they are confirming that the firmware hasn't been modified at final assembly .. it's hackable in the supply chain.

on the software side i use nld and really like it. no more phone home, height limit, speed. you can control all settings. you can also burn it up by running it on maxed out settings. years ago i flew 1k feet above a 4k mountain peak. they also have mother boards to build your own. my truck will go 100 mph,,, but i drive the speed limit. my choice.

litchi is a gps programmable drone program. i dont like it because it will brick your bird to prove you paid for it. if you always fly where there is a internet connection, no problem. if you say hike to the top of a 4k mountain in remote alaska and it bricks your drone it really sucks. i asked them to fix it/work around they said tough shit. fuck litchi.
maven does the same thing, pre program a flight path with pics/video. fly here, look at this, take a pic, then go here type thing. takes a while but really cool option. i have not tried maven but its free. litchi is 27$
it would be nice to see some deregulation on non commercial drone use but im not holding my breath. they are talking about professional use deregulation.,,,, if you get a small drone the regs are less onerous. some amazing stuff.

That Moose pass video is awesome. Thanks for sharing it. All that land and really beautiful but of little practical use in one sense.

According to Patrick's report, the US military is years behind from what Russia (and even Ukraine) is using in that war.
Too many DEI hires here, I guess, especially at Boeing.
