I do my very best to avoid conflicts of any type on the road but, a couple of issues have me puzzled. If I choose the HOV lane (very rarely) with two of us, what are the unwritten rules? I tend to go about 4 or 5 over just because but some jackasses act like I’m a problem! I get that I can use the right lane but what’s the point of the HOV lane then?! Again, avoiding a conflict is always my goal but it’s mixed in with getting from point A to B as well. I have another issue I’ll address later. Thanks.

if someone wants to overtake you no matter WHERE you are, move to the right.
    ALWAYS.

Yeah several ways to explain it have been coming to mind but in the end, that's really all there is to it, you need to move over if anybody wants to pass you.

Or, Ricky Rabbit can use the right lane and pass the car in the left lane. Simple.

Well, in some states it's technically illegal to pass on the right except under certain circumstances. Generally the rules of the road are far left lane for passing slower moving vehicles. So pass then get back over to the right.
That being said if someone is wanting to travel faster than you and you are in the HOV lane, exit the lane when safe to do so and let them on by.
I generally travel 5 mph over the posted limit in most areas but if someone wants to go faster, by all means go on ahead and you can catch the speeding ticket, not me.

Yeah, I think @Idahoser pretty much covered it, "...someone wants to overtake you, no matter WHERE you are, move to the right.
    ALWAYS."
Even if you are doing the speed limit and/or they are obviously going over the speed limit - matters not - get over and let them pass. It causes less chance of conflict or accidents and, who knows, maybe they have a valid reason to be in a hurry even if their speed is outside the legal limit. Besides, you're not the morality police so get over and let Law Enforcement deal with it if they are outside limit. Now, if their actions are truly dangerous, excessive speed, swerving, etc. then I think one should indeed report them; nevertheless, get over and get out of their way.

I don't go where they have HOV lanes.
I either am the fastest and use the left lane (not as often as it used to be)
or the slowest and use the right lane, which puts me in conflict with those entering the freeway but I'm pretty polite and let them in. If however they don't know what the right pedal is i get a bit annoyed. But overall, I can run between 65 - 75 for hours at a time without causing a problem for anyone including attracting a police officers attention in most cases.

I will however let some tourist in a hurry pass me and stay back about 500 yards and track them up to about 85 on 2 lane blacktop. I figure that way the hidden cop can pull out and have room to go after them ;)

I'm easy to find, I occupy the slow lane, sometimes even the lane to the right of the slow lane.

Around here ,, it's illegal to exit an HOV lane except at designated entrance and exit points.

Ah. That’s not the case here.
Moving over to the right would put me in the “fast lane” where I don’t want to be. The right lane seems to be the best choice for my driving style, as mentioned though there are occasions during heavy traffic that the HOV lane is inviting.

Man, I don't even know what a "HOV lane" is....

Living in Alaska can be quite limiting in so many ways. And I'm Okay with that.

I usually go 5 over and haven't gotten any tickets. Back when I lived in the PNW I usually commuted solo so didn't get to use HOV. Generally, if someone wants to be aggressive, I pull over (safely) and let them pass... I seriously do NOT miss JBLM traffic.

"High Occupancy Vehicle", usually 2+ people inside, basically to encourage carpooling.

HOV lane, had to look that one up. Use to be called car pooling lanes back in my day. The largest metro in my area would be Indianapolis. I went to the Indy 1500 gun show last spring and the traffic was horrible. I am talking driving in Florida horrible. I465 was a nightmare with the “Rules Of The Road” thrown out the window. Now granted I speed with traffic, but the maniacs driving the Camaros, Chargers, Mustangs, and Challengers with the occasional Corvettes were completely dangerous animal’s behind the wheel. It was 2012 since the last time I was in Indy, and I will never return if I don’t have any reason not to.

What is the appropriate speed for the HOV lane? What I call the “left lane” or “fast lane” is the one next to it, to the right. I avoid that one almost entirely.
