Sadly, We The People.

 

I had to walk half a mile to catch the bus at the end of the paved road, then I had a 45 minute bus ride, mostly on bumpy gravel roads.

 

Up through elementary, middle school and junior high, my bus stop was about a half mile away. Come high school, the bus cam right to my road, nearly in front of my house. But then I got my first motorcycle at 16, and no longer rode the bus.
