This joke doesn't measure up.

 

I'm waiting to hear two winter sounds that may be unique to this area. The first is the sound of an aluminum boat full of kids being pulled down the road by a pickup truck.

The other is far more unique. The howling roar of an LVTP7 amphibious assault vehicle coming down the snow covered road.

They'll do 45 MPH in top gear, but they can't steer at that speed, so the howling, screeching, clacking noise will vary as they drop out of high gear to steer and then go back to top gear until they need to steer again. It's a very distinctive sound and it woke me one night, just in time to get to the window and see the tracked beast roar past.

I figured he was probably taking somebody home, who had been on duty, or picking somebody up who thought they'd get out of standing duty because of the snow.
