yeah, don't miss that one bit.
Worst I remember was having to go out in -20 weather. I pulled the battery in to the house and hand a magnetic oil pan heater on the car over night. Still struggled to turn over. Didn't help I needed to the car to go to urgent care to get my hand looked at, yup, broken bone. That was fun, NOT!.

Up in Great Lakes, Ill. for US Navy tech training in 1980, one winter day I went outside the barracks to see all the cars in the parkinglot covered, only low mounds could be seen. We weren't going anywhere! Once the snow mostly melted my car was still too cold to start. Finally it warmed enough to melt away, then my danged car fired right up like nothing had happened! I guess it just hated snow.

Ah. Right. Haven't heard it since 1977 in college. But it definitely rattled the windows during a stereo war in the dorm. Frankenstein vs either Barracuda, Magic Man or Crazy on You by Heart. Not sure which, probably Barracuda, but definitely Heart. It was a miracle we didn't blow the speakers.

I can add 6/6/66, but that's all. I'm old, but not old enough for 5/5/55 or lower.

I remember three cold weather diesel starting aids from my youth. Burning diesel dipped corn cob on a wire positioned where fire would pull into the intake, the good old flame heaters on M35 and M54 multi-fuel engines, and on larger engineer equipment, just plain old burning newspaper stuffed in the intake. These all worked.

Then in Norway I caught a Sergeant from 2dFSSG attempting to start my units HMMWV's with ether. He'd already damaged three engines before I took his ether bottle away and taught him how to start a cold 6.2 without blowing out the glow plugs. 2dFSSG installed three new engines in our vehicles before we left Norway. To make it even more of an embarrassment for them, they had to come to me for engine oil, since they neglected to bring any. It ended up being a good thing I had wrangled myself a spot on that trip.

I never made it to Norway ,, my brother did tho ,, somehow , he procured one of them big puffy down filled blankets ,, sure came in handy in one of them no heat old houses I lived in after them Corps days.
The Corps taught me a lot while I was in ,,, but ,, I was raised by 30s and 40s era grandparents from eastern NC farmlands . Parris Island wasn't that much of a shock for me . My biggest shock ,, was what other kids didn't know ,, that was common life skills on my end .
But ,, I love my Corps
