Microsoft releases Win XP SP3

Its been almost 4 years since SP2 was released. With close to a hundred updates since SP2, Service Pack 3 has been needed. It appears this will be the last service pack for Windows XP. Microsoft plans to stop selling retail versions of Windows XP on June 30, 2008. So anyone who has not upgraded to Windows XP should think seriously about upgrading before this date.

Is there anything special in the Windows XP SP3 release?

Although Windows XP SP3 will not include any major changes, it will include all the patches and updates since SP2 was released along with 4 minor new features dealing with reliability and security.

<SMALL>Network Access Protection compatibility. This feature allows Windows XP machines to interact with the NAP feature in Windows Server 2008. This functionality is built into Windows Vista as well. NAP provides "computer health" policies that must be met before a particular computer is allowed to access the network. If a client cannot prove it is compliant with system health requirements (for example, that it has the latest operating systemand antivirus updates installed), its access to the network or communication on the network can be limited to a restricted network containing server resources so that health compliance issues can be remedied.​

Product Key-less install option. As with Windows Vista, new Windows XP w/ SP3 installs can proceed without entering a product key during Setup.​

Kernel Mode Cryptographics Module. A new kernel module that "encapsulates several different cryptographic algorithms," according to Microsoft. Kinda technical, but it deals with security.​

"Black hole" router detection algorithm. XP gains the ability to ignore network routers that incorrectly drop certain kinds of network packets. This, too, is a feature of Windows Vista. I just hope this doesn't cause more "limited or no connectivity" issues like I saw in SP2.

[FONT=Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif]I downloaded the standalone installer for SP3 from the link above and installed it on one of my laptops running Windows XP Home Edition. I thought it might be good to show some screenshots of the installation screen so you know what to expect. After saving the service pack to my desktop and double-clicking on it, I was greeted by the following setup screen recommending that I backup my system first (this is the same sort of screen that greeted users when installing SP2).[/FONT]

P.S. If you are currently using IE 7, uninstall it before updating to SP3. If you don't do it, then you will not be able to uninstall IE 7 after you install SP 3 and IE 7 might now work right since SP 3 comes with IE 6.

So, just uninstall IE 7, install SP3, then reinstall IE 7. Done.

I'm a little uncertain if I should install sp3 or not as I mostly use Linux now that the team here got me converted. Weeks can go by that I don't need to use windows at all and then not to use the Internet, although I do have virus protection in windows. If I go in windows for anything, the virus ware wants to download the updates.

My wifes computer is a windows only machine, my laptop is duel-booted. Hers already has ie7 on it, so from what you say, that could be an issue if I do the sp3 on it. After I downloaded ie7 on her computer, I decided I'd not put it on my laptop. I hate ie and also came to Firefox because of the team here and my disgust with Microsoft.


BTW, this comment probably belongs in the Linux sub forum, but I joined 3 Linux forums and none are all that friendly or helpful. While they do list useful information, you better not ask for or offer any input or advise. They give rudeness a new name. I've learned that post count does not mean superior knowledge. Just that the person has been more active on the forum than others.

 

Thanks Ghrit, I only use yahoo for mail on my laptop and my wife's with IE7 she uses Outlook for our Internet service email address. I had mine set up to download it too, but that ended up just adding confusion. She was always downloading email and not telling me, so I switched to have friends and family send me email to yahoo. She still doesn't tell me when I get email, but at least most of my personal mail comes to me. If I can get SP3 as an exe file, so I only have to download it once, I may go that route.

 

I only uninstalled IE 7 before I dowloaded SP3 because of the article stating that once you downloaded SP3 with IE 7 already on your computer, you might have problems with IE because IE 6 comes with SP3. Also, it said that once you installed SP3 while having IE 7 on your computer, you might not be able to uninstall IE 7 like you could before you installed SP3.....FYI

 

Thanks for the tip conagher. I finally decided to try out SP3 on my desktop, thank God i didn't install it yet.

 

We're starting our evaluation of XP SP3 at work -- so far we haven't had any of the problems mentioned by "the media". We just need to make sure it doesn't have any unexpected problems with custom applications.
