In the supermarket checkout line, the cashier tells an elderly gentleman that he should bring his own bag, as plastic bags are not good for the environment.

The man apologizes and explains: “It’s just that this green trend didn’t exist in my day.”

The employee replied, “That’s our problem now. Your generation didn’t take enough care to preserve the environment.”

“You’re right,” the man tells him: “Our generation didn’t have that green trend back then.”

Back then, milk, soda, and beer bottles were returned to the store and sent back to the manufacturer to be washed and sterilized before being refilled, so the same bottles could be used again and again. That’s how they really recycled them.

    • We went up the stairs, because there weren’t escalators in every shop or office, that way we conserved electricity.

    • We used to walk to businesses instead of driving 300-horsepower cars every time we needed to travel 1 mile.

    • Back then, we washed babies’ diapers because there were no disposable ones.
We dried our clothes on a clothesline, not in electric dryers. Solar and wind power truly dried our clothes.

    • Back then we had one television or radio in the house, not a television in every room.

    • In the kitchen, we ground in a mortar and beat by hand, because there were no electric machines to do it for us.

    • When we packed something fragile to send by mail, we used crumpled old newspapers to protect it, not bubble wrap.

    • In those days we didn’t use an electric lawnmower to cut the grass; we used a mower that was powered by muscle.

    • We exercised by working, so we didn’t need to go to a gym to run on electrically powered treadmills.

    • We drank directly from the tap or from a glass when we were thirsty, instead of using small cups or plastic bottles every time we needed to drink water.

    • We changed the razor blades instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade lost its edge.

    • In those days, kids went to school on their bikes or on foot, instead of using their mom or dad as a taxi driver.

    • We had one socket in each room, not several power strips to power a dozen devices.
-And we didn’t need an electronic device to receive signals from satellites located thousands of kilometers away in space to find the nearest pizzeria.

    • We used landline phones and there was only one for every ten houses, today you have 10 cell phones for every house, and when you throw them away the batteries pollute the land and thousands of liters of water.

    • So it seems logical to me that the current generation continually complains about how IRRESPONSIBLE we old folks were for not having this green trend in our time.
