If you didn't get that mask on correctly or in time you would cry like a baby, or so they told me in ROTC, as our instructors didn't have tear gas grenades.

 

We went through similar training in the US Navy. I had the dubious fortune of standing right next to the bucket they tossed gas generating stuff into. I got my mask on PDQ! They said the training gas was far less strong than the real thing, but it was still pretty bad. One of our guys was bald and he claimed it burned his head.
I actually found the Smoke House for fire fighting training to be worse. Had us all gagging and choking!

 

As an Alabama fan, I always wanted to eat there. Finally, they built a Dreamland Restaurant near my hometown, but I never ate there because everyone told us how bad it was. Just big old pork ribs and light bread! No sides, no children's menu, no baby-back ribs, etc. Nobody ever went back and they soon closed.

 

That's not good!

 

That may be why I had such fun running my chamber at the range. We had an M146 trailer with all the window covers pulled down, so it was bright and cheerful looking inside. Lieutenants would enter via a narrow steel staircase with no railings and I'd pack them in shoulder to shoulder until no more would fit. Then the door would close, and latch loudly. All the chatter stopped. Best attention getter ever.

I'd give my brief on how things would go. They would don and clear their masks, I would introduce the gas, and once everybody was breathing comfortably in the gas environment I would step in front of each man. They would remove their mask and sound off Name, Rank and Service Number. Then they would again don and clear their mask and I would be sure they were okay before moving to the next man. Most got to the second digit of their service number before the gas choked them up.

Lots of overconfidence, since the light diffused the gas and you could only see sparkles in the air. It was the same brightly lit space, but it wasn't so cheerful now.

Commands to clear the mask were reduced to just "BLOW!" rather than "clear" as I blocked the outlet on their mask. Then with my hands over their filters I'd command "SUCK!" to ensure they had a seal. I rarely had to tell anyone to "BREATHE!" but their first small breaths cleared the panic from their eyes and I knew I could move on.

The exit down the steps was treacherous, and everybody had to go slowly. Something that didn't always happen. I always thought the guys working the stairs had a harder job than I did.

I loved my job.

 

I recall those days...but being on an NBC team I ended up being nearly immune to CS.

My wife, on the other hand, not so much!
