My 2009 Win7 computer is barely able to ride the surf anymore, mostly holding onto the boogie board for dear life. I have had a hiatus from this forum, sorry to say, but it wasn't because I disliked this site. Being a follower of Q, I went full bore (part time) digital soldier and kept getting kicked off of X and Truth Social while fighting the commies on there. Well, my hardware and software have their limitations and I can no longer access MOST of the sites I used to frequent, so I'm retiring. I keep getting HTTP ERROR 409, and through extensive research into it, it boils down to my ancient version of windows on my old 2009 machine- especially my version of Win7 that was 32 bit. According to my Bios, I have the Intel Core i5-2500, which is (if I'm not mistaken) a 64 bit core. I'd like to keep this system, mostly because it is perfectly fine to do all the things I do with it, as long as it has a compatible operating system for where I am surfing. I don't game on this system- I have a separate system for that. I've been looking at Linux Mint to replace the Windows operating system. I still want to use Brave browser, and luckily they have a version and are keeping it updated. I found out how to transfer all my passwords. I don't know about my files, I do need my tax returns, personal photos and such, so I will be transferring them to a stand-alone SSD before I try major surgery to my computer. I'm just lucky you guys here on the 'Monkey haven't kicked me out, yet. I'll catch up with the times, I swear!
you're quite the plunger keeping anything important on that machine - it's a pure miracle you haven't gone blue screen some morning .......
Been on a little hiatus myself. I'd take a good look at Linux. I've been running Ubuntu for years and the GUI is very nice and there are plenty of free apps that are as good or better than Windows versions. The Windows software that I do need with two exceptions run just fine using WINE, which is a Windows emulator that does not require a virtual machine. The only real exception is Blue Iris NVR. I'm moving it from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 10 server in the next month so I can strip out all of Microsoft's spyware. The path for Windows beginning with 12 is a cloud based subscription service. That means zero privacy and total tracking of everything you do as well as all data visible to Microsoft and whoever they sell it to. I see social scores in our future. Any version of Linux will run much faster on your computer than likely even Windows 7. If your computer is too old buy a used one that's five years old for peanuts.
The latest Linux Mint is the same as the most recent Ubuntu release, so you can't go wrong with either.
Not sure why, but I wrote Ubuntu above but meant Mint. @gunbunny , one of the best things about Mint is that you can easily install it on a bootable thumb drive and take it for a spin. If you like it you can install it from there. Do note that it will overwrite everything on your hard drive, so backup all your on computer files first. LibreOffice is free and does everything that Microsoft Office does (without the AI crap) 99% just as well. It also can use different fie formats including those used by MS Office. Gnu Image Manipulator Program (GIMP) is a free alternative to Photoshop if you work with graphics.
