Hey guys, I thought that I would share these AWESOME "Historical Food Preservations Pics" with y'all (<--came across them during a homeschool lesson....)

Now one of my "PET-PEEVES" is the MODERN COMMERCIAL CONSUMERISTIC MONEY-MAKING-MACHINE.... & how they have convinced modern man/the masses that they can't do nothin' for himself 'cause "EVERYTHING IS SO DANGEROUS!" (<-- which promotes more spending/money-making ya know 'cause then FEAR is instilled and you'll just buy more inferior mass produced modern products @ the store instead)or that you "HAVE TO BUY AN ABUNDANCE OF MODERN THINGS TO ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING".
What a bunch of MALARKY/HOW OUTRAGEOUS, considering man in his early beginnings didn't preserve his food with mason jars, pressure canners, and all other sorts of recommended gobbley-goo!?!?! Bah Humbug!!!!!!!!!!

But anyway, I think more of us should learn how to "DO FOR OURSELVES" once again.... especially prior to T.S.H.T.F.

So here we go, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE BELOW PHOTOS ARE OF???

Above is an older Historical Photograph, & below is a Modern Day Photo as this type of Food Preservation which is still Culturally Practiced. THANK GOD, it hasn't been LOST FOREVER!!!!

    I'll give you a HINT ~

It's " A WHOLE ANIMAL PRESERVED FOR PART OF A PERSONAL FAMILY FOOD SUPPLY " this animal was preserved whole & stored for ages (yes it's possible/safe & has been done safely throughout man's past). Notice the critter tail @ the bottom???? Also did ya know, that it was used as a "MATTRESS" until it was later used for NOURISHMENT PURPOSES!? Most AMAZING, huh?!!!!!!

Look closely and you can kinda tell what kind of critter this is....

It is A WHOLE PIG PRESERVED!!!!

Yep, it was preserved by 1st GUTTING, then BONING, SALTED & finally SEALED... and then used as a high-quality sleeping surface until needed! LOL Nope it wasn't vacuum sealed, smothered in nasty modern day preservatives, or heat treated until all nutrients/nutritional benefits were completely destroyed and so on.... Chinese Food Preservation at its finest ~ AMAZINGLY AWESOME!!!!!

Two reasons the Eastern folks use such hot spices . . . .

    1) It hides the taste of 'high' meat that we would find unpalatable. Not to say it isn't safe for Human consumption - but taste is a very subjective thing!

    2) The spices do have anti-bacterial properties, and help kill the microbugs.

That 'whole animal' preserving is pretty cool though! As my Dad said of his early days during the Great Depression - they used "everything but the squeal!"

Can you give us a direct link on this preservation? More detailed instructions are needed by me.

DW (Wildernessgal) got this from a book that we have but it doesn't go into details on how to do it.

You'd need one heck of a huge "Seal-a-Meal" bag! [ROFL]

That would be a great way to **** with the muzzies. Have them sleep on pig mattresses. I am giddy with glee at the thought.

    My aplogies Jim,

But the book that I got this info. from is older & not exactly a recipe book (more of a historical type of book)... it's a favorite book of mine from when I was a child and I am currently using it as a homeschooling/educational tool about different parts of the world/cultures and etc....

Throughout the book they talk about old simplistic ways... Another fine example is how they show the Laplanders migrating with their few dairygoats & etc. In it they show them living in a very primitive shelter made of wood, hides, mud & rocks.... they say that "the good Laplander wife has homemade cheese made from her goat's milk at all times" and whilst they travel they "break off pieces of goat's mlk cheese, drop it into a cup and fill it with hot water to make a very healthy/nutritious drink." Neat neat stuff!!! :)

I did write "exactly what was described in the book" with the "whole pig preserved photographs" they describe an order of preservation (which is helpful/useful)

    *** 1st GUTTING

    *** BONING

    *** SALTING

*** and finally SEALING it !

... all ya gotta do now is master those skills in that order, get a whole pig and try it out/see how successful you are. I'd say, KEEP ON TRYING UNTIL YOU SUCCEED! Good luck & if you do try it, let us know how it worked out and DEFINATELY TAKE SOME PICS TO SHARE! ;)

    Sincerely,

isn't that what happens in the morning after a night of hard drinking and "hogging" and the sudden realization when you open your eyes and try to remember the night only to notice you were so successful drinking that you were too successful hogging? the only hope is that you can tip-toe out of the room before said 'hog' awakes so you don't have to look face-to-face with that which you would not want to remember.
