My Grandma in Indiana (Mom's Mother) had one of those old drum style clothes washers, complete with the strainer rollers on top to get the water out of the clothes before hanging them on the outdoor line. I remember the old roundtop fridges too. I was three years old in 1960, the year we left Grandma's place on that Indiana farm and Dad brought us to his home town in North Florida.

 

Growing up, my neighbor, a transplanted NJian, had one. It would attach to the kitchen sink. This was the late 50s.

 

Ours was in the laundry room in the basement, and there was a laundry chute at the top of the stairs.

I remember a table and chairs just like that and a Norge refrigerator that would probably still be working if we'd kept it.

I learned that the wringer would mash my little fingers really well! Ouch!

My grandparents had an old one sitting on the back porch ,,, but by the time I seen it ,, it wasn't a back porch ,,, the back porch had become an enclosed laundry room ,, and a bedroom added behind that .
But I remember my young ass holding doors open for my dad, uncles and grandpa trying to get thing out of the house. Can't say wether it worked or not ,, grandma probably just wanted to upgrade to modern times .
