A friend of mine sent me this. Has anyone heard anything about it??? Bell Canada and TELUS (formerly owned by Verizon) employees officially confirm that by 2012 ISP's all over the globe will reduce Internet access to a TV-like subscription model, only offering access to a small standard amount of commercial sites and require extra fees for every other site you visit. These 'other' sites would then lose all their exposure and eventually shut down, resulting in what could be seen as the end of the Internet. Dylan Pattyn *, who is currently writing an article for Time Magazine on the issue, has official confirmation from sources within Bell Canada and is interviewing a marketing representative from TELUS who confirms the story and states that TELUS has already started blocking all websites that aren't in the subscription package for mobile Internet access. They could not confirm whether it would happen in 2012 because both stated it may actually happen sooner (as early as 2010). Interviews with these sources, more confirmation from other sources and more in-depth information on the issue is set to be published in Time Magazine soon. Seems to me like there would be enouph different ISPs that some of them would choose to continue makeing money. If they want to sell packages like cable where you only get to go to comercial sites and such crap then I figure LOADS of people like me would just stop haveing internet or find an ISP that still had the 'real' internet and give them our money. I suppose they may try it but it just seems to me that the market would shoot that idea down.
Market statistics say that this will NEVER work.The internet is evolving far too quickly for this to even stay afloat. I have been listening to the Net neutrality argument for as long as the "chipped National ID cards" argument. Both are a terrifying way to limit a populations access to the world at large, both however will never work in America "A land of individuals". We the people of the united states will never give up exploring as our forefathers did way back all those hundreds of years ago. It is in our blood and in our mindset that we will learn everything and go everywhere. The world is Americas Oyster.
Yup.. "internet 2" the current one is TOO free.corporations see mo' money, if they can toll our bought and paid for highways the bought and paid for internet (through darpa research ...)is not much different.really hate to see it but its just one more surreal "in your face" try and stop us thing ...perhaps it wil lmutate into a public "ham" completely wireless packet systtem. Anybody anywhere offering a comparable service will just get all the traffic. hard to see this going away; all the multi billion dollar porn industry has to do is threaten(lobby)congress and we may be okay.
Also would imagine that even if the big corps went that way that some of the more inspired average Joes would set up ISPs that would work similar to the old LAN or whatever systems where you basicly manualy dialed the number into the computer to contact the computer hosting a given site. I know my neighbor in my appartment several years back used to dial up several localy hosted sites direct when didnt have an ISP just the modem and a land line.
