Over the next four years, we are likely to witness the greatest mass exodus of vehicles off America’s highways in history. By 2012, there should be some 10 million fewer vehicles on American roadways than there are today—a decline that dwarfs all previous adjustments including those during the two OPEC oil shocks.
And who will be parking their cars? The 57 million American households that have both cars and access to something resembling public transit. Gasoline at $7 begins to approach prices Europeans have paid for years, meaning that chunk of America “will start to act more and more like Europeans,” Mr. Rubin says. Not soccer moms in a minivan—soccer fans, searching for tokens:
Our analysis suggests that about half of the number of c

If the highway traffic drops that far, I may be tempted to ride my Mountain Bike in to work and back - less than ten miles one-way.
The traffic is too dangerous right now - the cagers have NO regard for two-wheelers - motorised or leg-powered!
A security guard at work who is also my neighbor does ride his MB to work - but he's much more experienced at road riding than I am!

At $7 a gallon, my KLR650 will still suffice. My Toyota is already seldom used, and gathering dust.

were(wife and i) are looking into turning in both or one of our gasaholics. a pickup and Sub. though they are great for bugging out. we can't keep pouring as much $$$ into them as we are. she wants a mini-van/crossover thing that sips less gas. i'm not against it,well maybe a little, i just don't want to give up the versitility.

now for the tinfoil - with less people being able to move about freely controling the people will be easier.

At least for us Diesel Guys, we can make are own fuel if need be, right now I am running used cooking oil well filtered and thinned with acetone. My mileage went up with this mixture and I have pulled and inspected the injectors every 500 miles to see if this fuel concoction is doing any damage. So far I have not seen any damage to the injectors.
Since my M1009 is all mechanacle, their should be no problem. I will have the injector pump pulled and tested next month to be sure. The diesel specalist has told me that this fuel mixture should cause no problems because my CUCV being a military vehicle, all the fuel lines are steel and the injector pump has an anti corosive plating applied to its innards.

With less cars on the road, it will be much safer for those of us with motorcycles. Already picked up a gas-saver car and plan on eventually getting another motorcycle. Maybe by trading one of the muddin' toys off, sorry Tracy.

It won't make one iota of a difference, people will bitch about it but will still carry on, and buying a Diesel won't help either, as that has been more expensive than Petrol in the recent past.

I was thinking about getting a bullshit burning car as their would appear to be a surplus of that coming straight out of the Politicians mouths, and its for free.

Complete agreement, but the thing I am observing is the group that complains the loudest about current prices are those that refuse to change their habbits, the trucking industry is the only execption. Case in point, my latest drive to Indy saw an awful lot of speeders, they were driving econo type cars, my blazer can do 21mpg highway if I keep my rpms around 1300 which is about 45-50 mph. The dirty looks that I recieved from everyone passing me was mind boggling. Yet when reality hits these idiots, they are the one that will pay the highest price.

Believe it or not, on an frn per mile basis, diesel is still a very good deal. If I were in position to glom onto a light diesel vehicle, I would. (There are a couple diesel bikes to be found, too. Gotta look closer at that after the move.)
