K, lets say its a SHTF situation or a TEOLAWKI You bug out or bug in, you get setup pretty good, you've traveled light, what do you bring for reading material? This may sound silly but I'm a FEROCIOUS reader what do you guys plan to bring for reading material? i could bring the bible, already read it two or three times over my life...but it would be neat if someone made one of those super fine print thin page books that collects all the classics or a couple thousand short stories. Just a thought, boredom can kill. Secondly I have a Mossberg 500 with a smooth bore, I should not have a problem firing rifled slugs through it as the spin comes from the rifling on the slug? Rifled or foster slugs in a smooth bore, sabot, rifled or foster in a rifled bore. The rifling on a slug does not impart any significant spin on the projectile. The twist on a rifled slug is in the opposite direction then the twist in a rifled barrel. The purpose of rifling on a slug is to allow space for the displacement of lead when the slug is engaged with the rifling in the barrel and to allow for the displacement of lead when the slug is passing through a choke. So far as reading goes, you might get a slew of CD books and take the weight penalty of a laptop and solar charger.
ditto on the cd's and if i was you i would scap the slugs and go for 00 buck. you can do more damage and possibly even take out multiple targets with one shot if they are close enough or if your far enough.just think of 10 pellets covering a 5 yard area with one shot instead of one shot hitting a 1"area.i have boxs and boxs of buck shot and no slugs for my shotgun.
Slugs increases your range and have a devastating effect on the target. A slug will do thing that buckshot could never do. Have a look at the box o’ truth web site.
I'd be carrying a mix of loads: No. 6 for small game. Buck for close defense and deer. Slugs for longer range, anti-vehicle, door breaching..... You wouldn't need many slugs. My reading material would be a good survival manual and an ID guide for plants/mushrooms. Need to get a pocket Bible - mine is "church size".
i have other guns for longer ranges but as for me i wouldn't want the weight of the slugs i used them one year to hunt and that was it the next time i used buck shot and it's been buck shot ever sinse. to me if you shoot at a car you can not only take out the windows but you can also takeout the radiator too and possibly take out the passenger or driver all in one shot and with someone in the car havin the windows suddenly blowout and you get hit or your buddies get hit you'll think there is multiple shooters shooting at you.. buckshot kinda has a mind altering advantage to it when it's being shot at you. sorta like a cluster bomb to me 10 is better than one. now thats just my opinion.
Don't shoot slugs through a full choke. I would guess you're mossberg has screw-in chokes, no? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they recommend using no more constriction than "modified"?
For you senior members, check out the 100YARD, not a misprint, accuracy of the new line of slugs; Win. I think. For the Newbies, your load depends upon your chamber 2 3/4, 3" etc and how many at what distance you are defending against. For example you do not want tripple 0 in your house!!! and you do not want #4 at 100 yards, etc, so plan carefully and match the ammo to your scenario. Overbore
What brands of 12 guage do you guys reccomend? I would like to have 3 types of ammo, #4 shot for small game (ducks, geese, rabbit, dogs), buckshot OO and slugs for HD/ large game (gator, bear, deer). Who makes the best of these 3 types. 2 3/4" preferably, but 3" will also work. I have a Saiga 12 which can feed both sizes, however the 20 rnd drum can only feed 2 3/4". I'm also looking to reload these and want a minimum of components. if all three had same primer, powder, hull and wad that would be best. Any help?
Get the biggest gig ipod you can afford or buy more than one. The 120 gig will hold great amounts of pdfs for reading during shtf and buy a small flexible roll out solar charger and you can charge them on the go. You will find it wont take much to house the library you are looking for in a ipod. You wont believe how many TM Manuals they will hold.
Blackpowder Rifle Balls for Shotgun Reloading Handy to have some 50 Cal blackpowder balls for reloading 12 gauge slug loads ....... no sabot accuracy but just as good as factory load pumpkin balls ....... even better to buy the 50 CAl lead mold and make your own ......
Cache your books. Anything electronic is destined to fail... ALTHOUGH It doesn't cost much to cache a bunch of books on DVDs in case you find yourself with computer access. See: Main Page - Gutenberg Download everything you can and burn them off. But cache books JIC
The Bible is the number one pick for reading. I've been through it 6 or 7 times and ALWAYS find new insight every time it is read. After that something like "Surviving Nuclear War" so that you can learn something useful in any down time....
I keep all my reading material on one a 8 gig flashdrive, easier to carry/store than a bunch of CD's. Just about have this one full and will start on # 2. I have a small portable solar panel for recharging my laptop if needed. I stopped buy slugs a couple of years ago. At present I have a 50 cal ammo can full of store bought slugs, but all my new stuff is homegrown using a hand cast slug from Lee or Lyman or a 72 cal. Round ball. Pretty accurate for a pupkin chucker but I only shoot out of cylinder and improved cylinder bore, Blackjack was correct, you should not shoot slugs out of anything tighter than a modified choke. I also keep a .311 round ball mold around for casting buckshot.
