I guess it depends on your definition or concept of SHTF. For example, if it were MZBs, I think an AR15 or clone would be nice to have to hand to go with an 870 in 12 ga. If the 101st Airborne (or the local division of the "support" troops assigned to Homeland Security) I think being gone a FAR better option. We know from your other posts that you have revolvers and a rifle available, and you would like a 45 (if you don't already have one not mentioned.) What is your concept of SHTF? That said and asked, there are a number of this type of discussion on the forum, might be worth your time to do a bit of poking around the board. You'll find all sorts of ideas dealing with different scenarios.

It depends upon the circumstances. I favor the AR-15 and a .45, either XD or 1911. Could be a 12 gauge shotgun though. Depends upon the circumstances.

Untill I got way down the list of contingencies, all my guns would continue to be where I was, so the short list of what I would be useing would be, a couple of centerfire handguns for protection and constant carry, a 20 ga pump shotgun (and a couple singleshot ones) for pest controle and some hunting as well as one option for thumps in the night, a .270 bolt gun to get game thats out a ways or elimenate problems at a distance, AK/SKS for large game in the brush or if house was under siege from MZBs as well as larger pest controle like yotes and dogs and such, 10/22 to slaughter animals and to do a lot of the hunting particularly since have the most ammo for it, black powder rifles for some hunting to extend supply of ammo, and what ever other tools are at hand that best fit the particular job. Then also the bow and traps for a lot of the meat gathering rather than wasteing the ammo and makeing noise.

I have every intention of bugging in and if I had to BO due to fire or an NBC threat localy then would most likely have a vehicle to do so and untill Im trecking a distance on foot all the guns and ammo would go along (as well as the bow, arrows and trapping gear) for the same reason I have a selection now, a big flat head screw driver is a great tool but its far from the best tool for every job in ANY enviroment.

A 12 ga pump,308 bolt and a 22 rifle all IMHO should be in you arsenal.
Yes others are interchangable to that list..but I think with those three you could get by till you have time to access what else you'd need.

I am quite happy to resurrect this one lol. If the SHTF in one scenario I have to say I know exactly what I would use. See the thing is no matter if there was a riot situation, or up rising, or zombie out brake, or Red Down situation, the best way to go in my opinion is a .22 rifle. I would go with a Walther p22 and a Henry US Survival rifle. This is why, first off the ammo is cheap and abundant, second it’s damn lite and you could carry a lot of it, and I don’t care what the cal. Is, getting shot sucks! I know people are going to say it’s a weak cal. But most people don’t Kevlar there legs, knees, and feet or there face for that matter. If you have a decent scope on the rifle then in a riot situation you could keep the looters busy for hours and in a zombie situation sense supposedly nothing but a brain scramble would work it only matters that you get a head shot. Might as well carry around lite ammo so you could carry more, sense .22 would do the trick with more then adequacy. Also in the Red Down situation as I said before a decent scope would work beautifully for sniping. And I only said the Henry would be my choice because it’s lite weight and the ammo is from a mag. I had a .22 rifle that held 17+1 but when the ammo was out you had to stop everything and reload the gun one bullet at a time. With the Henry you could have a couple 30 round mags. Anyway, if some one doesn’t agree that 22 is all you need to defend yourself against looters, up risers, zombies, and worst case scenario hunting for food (and I have a few friends that have taken down dear with a .22 rifle so I know it’s plenty for that too) then please by all means repost to this. I am looking for pros and cons and I’m hopping some one else will disagree and brings good conversation to the table. O ya the other qualifyer is that it be semi-auto.

I was going to post something then thought it was not worth getting banned over.
So I will just leave it at WITC. [gun] [peep]

At first, you'll use whatever you have on you. You don't walk around with a battle rifle, do you? Some STHF scenarios are surprises; terrorist attack, nuke attack, earthquake... you get no warning. Your sidearm is your friend.
If you do get warning (plague, economic meltdown, martial law) your best bet is to stay home and hunker down. In that case, you can only use one firearm at a time and it should be the most powerful weapon that you have experience using. Short range; a short-barreled 12 GA shotgun. Longer range, whatever semi-auto rifle you've trained with. Make sure you have enough loaded magazines.
I would not pick a .22. Yes, light, no recoil, low sound signature. Also low penetration, short range, no stopping power. Sniping? You're going to get killed using a .22 against someone armed with anything else.

I wasn’t thinking in the sense of a battle and fighting off people in a combat scenario. I was more of the school of thought to run like a bitch and hide in your house while picking people off if you had to do that at all, hopefully you could just remain hidden. I would hope you would be on top of your stuff enough to put some one down before they got the chance to tare down your door or brake into your place, but I fully agree with you that a scatter gun would be the best if they got in. but if you were hunkered up stairs or on the roof or if you only have a one story you could still get on the roof or at lest watch your doors and windows. And what if some one else does have something else? That in no way shape or form means you will die and they will not, you both have an equal opportunity to kill each other. Yes they will do more damage if they hit you, but it’s not fare to act like if you hit them first they will not be knocked on there ass. A gun shot is a gun shot, right or wrong?

We'll all concede the .22 is lethal. victims may take awhile to bleed out, unless a soft target brain shot is accomplished.
I like the the .22 for the common reasons as much as the next guy.IDF (israeli defense forces used suppressed 10/22's for riot suppression on the rabble rousers, but found them too lethal,(quiet,no recoil a soldiers thought of them as bb guns and killed instead of wounded.)

However; One of the monkeys here has real world first hand experience being shot with the .22 lr and IIRC he didn't know he was hit; it didn't seem to slow him down ...:(I've screwed up .22 shots at squirrels and had the tenacious little tree rats refuse to die.
and contrary to a few real live zombie walk-ons( limp-on appearances)from zombies here. Zombies only exist infilm...

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in any way shape or form saying .22 is the end all end all, or that a more powerful gun wouldn’t work better. I was saying that for all practical reasons it would get the job done with the bare minimum of everything. Cost, carry, light, no recoil, low sound signature, ect ect ect. =)

Imho and previous training the only reason to shoot people is your life is "imminent danger"( yourhonor;membersof the jury: I feared for my life;he would have killed me with his weapon.). Like the within 21 ft with a knife rule. If you actually have to shoot some body it better be to stop them from killing you. so they better stop immediately. You can kill a deer with a tennis raquet but that doesn't make it a self defense weapon.

That said;I agree They have a whole lot going for them, and alot of families survived the '29 crash because they had a single shot .22 rifle and the occasional box of cartridges.
Now a.22 rifle with a .45 ( pick your favorite centerfire)sidearm would make a workable combination.

If you read back to the first post I made I said a Walther p22 and a Henry US. The reason I said those guns was basically the cowboy reason. They use to carry .40 or .45 rifle and revolver so they wouldn’t have to carry two different types of ammo around. I completely agree with you that a .45 would be awesome but I was thinking more if you had to hit the road and abandoned you post for what ever reason it would be better to have all guns using the same cal. And of course it’s so much liter then the other cal.s

so would you rather have 30-06 and a 22 or a 22 and 45 acp????

The marlin 60 is a Cadillac of .22 rifles I think, and the 30-60 is great but I was thinking more for travel purposes the Henry brakes down and if it was worst case scenario you would be carrying a lot of other stuff I’m sure, and its lite-ness stood out to me for that as well. The other rifles would be longer, heavier, and the marlin in a muzzle loader and I would rather a mag loader for speed. I just came across these gun kits that let you convert your .45 into what ever you need pretty quickly. This is a quote from one of those pages “You can easily convert your gun or polymer frame pistol to shoot .22 LR, 9x 19mm, 10 mm, .38 Super, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP. No matter what your need, one gun can do it all” I think that would be pretty bad ass just in case you run across random ammo so a lite and practical carry fold up rifle and a hand gun semi auto with a conversion kit sounds great.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
