Ok, those of you following the last SHTF form will most likely play in this one too lol. Any who, I was all on the Henry US Survival rifle and a .22 hand gun like the Walther P22 because bla bla bla. Anyway I just came across the 10/22 Charger after a couple guys mentioned it and I think it’s a much better choice it’s small enough and light enough to be used as a hand gun but is still a rifle, also the Charger has 50 round mags and the Henry only has a max 25 round mag. Anyway, two questions, first has anyone actually used a Charger with the *Tear Drop* 50 round mag and dose it jam/ is it a piece of crap? And two, (because everyone loves this topic) when the zombies and looters come what would you suggest as a hand gun to carry as well. Here is the twist; think of the person carrying it as a small woman who would need/want a powerful hand gun that won’t make her arm go numb after three shots. Come on now….dig deep for a good answer.

    Time: soon after TSHTF
    Place: your home town
The riots have ended. The fires have mostly burned out. The survivors have organized to clean up the bodies. One group finds an almost unrecognizable corpse still clutching a .22 with a 50 round capacity magazine... empty, of course.
One member of the group is keeping a record. "What did he die of?", he asks. "Was he shot? Stabbed? Burned? Did the zombies eat his brains?" He reaches down to check the body.
"No need to check." says his partner, and spits on the ground. "He died of playing too many video games."

Thanks Quietone I never know how to just come out and express that thought...Grant you are really trying to come up with a situation to justify buying a "toy"(insert your favorite object).
Don't feel bad we've all done it.
Alot of it is the consumerism we were all brought up with ( if only I buy the right things I'll be safe and warm).
the job drives the tools not the other way around.
    If we were discussing hammers
It' be like:" What's the best hammer for framing a house?
    well a 16oz framing(claw) hammer,of course...
What if I used a ballpeen and carried a nailbar? It's lighter and then I could peen rivets if a bridge was collapsing and had to get across it...."
But guns aren't hammers; guns are cool and have "mojo"

    Face it guys there are no zombies who would try to eat your brains.( Not that there's anything particularly un-tasty about your grey matter);

Looters may want your "Plasma big screen" and as much an insult to pride as it is to see it go down the street with some low life. You would probably "Survive"...(food supplies are another matter).

Quigley, I like the looks of your choice of weapon. What is it built on, Rem 870?

Buy one for a plinking toy; they are a lot of fun, outside of a squirrel invasion, just don't try to fool anyone into thinking it has a practical purpose other than tin-cans with bad attitudes.

Just get a Ruger 10/22 rifle and as many Butler Creek high capacity mags you can afford and if you still have funds get either of the threaded barrel versions of the Walther P22 or Sig Mosquito. Everybody has got to start somewhere but if it were me I would look into the future at acquiring at least one larger caliber rifle, pistol and a 12 gauge shotgun.

The Ruger 10/22 Charger looks like a big bulky heavy pistol that uses 10/22 mags and seems a little impratical to me but maybe I'm saying that because I already have a 10/22 rifle. I don't know that I would only want a 22 rifle and pistol for protection but if it's all you got it's better than throwing rocks.

Ditto, my local dealer was all excited when he got them in, but I quickly told him that I thought they were a "tweener", not big enough to actually be as accurate as a rifle but too big to be a good pistol. They look like a gimmick, not practical enough for me.

I was addicted to Doom for almost a year.
Problem is, once you get your Super Zombie Killer .22 you can't really do anything with it. If you have the money for extras and some friends who are interested (and you don't live in a nanny state that makes it illegal) you might start a paintball group.

I had an interesting conversation recently with a friend of mine. This guy is the real deal. Tour in Marine Corp, then into the Secret Service. Got tired of risking his life for scum bag pols and went into private work, Blackwater type stuff with three merc tours in Africa.

In other words a guy whose opinion on firearms and tactics I put a lot of faith in. We were talking about .22's and he told me that a .22 can be just as deadly as any bigger caliber if you know how to use it. I said sure I had heard of assasins using them but that was up close, back of the head stuff. He said he wasn't talking about up close but at a normal confrontational distance. 10-20 yards or so.

He said that the .22 is apt to not penetrate a breast bone or skull or even deflect off of a rib, but if you can penetrate to vital organs it is deadly. The trick is, according to him, to aim at the hips.

Ok, explain that I said. He said to drop to your knee and empty the clip into the guy's groin. He said that the hip area is usually the least protected, ie: no heavy jacket etc., and the hip and groin area has little muscle mass to penetrate and the rounds go straight to the hip bone. The curvature of the large hip bones deflect the bullets straight up into the body cavity, shredding vital organs. He said if you empty a clip of .22 into a mans groin area that it is like shoving a shotgun barrel up his azz and pulling the trigger.

I have never heard that anywhere else before but it makes sense. And like I said it comes from a guy that ought to know.

Of course he would use a larger caliber if available but he said that the .22 will get the job done and it is also good for women who may be recoil shy of larger calibers. That's how the conversation started. He said he gave his wife a .22 rifle and pistol and that's how he trained her to shoot them.

wow that's very handy to know...I remember john ross (no stranger to firearms) (author of "unintended consequences") has the first shots of the "second revolution" begin with a bunch of jbts hit with what was in reach( a .22)
