If you have a .30-06, why would you want another rifle? The .30-06 has taken everything on four legs or two for the past century. Both the.270 and the .243 are good cartridges but ammo isn't always available for them at he local mom and pop hardware store but you can pretty much find .30-06 anywhere. $750 will buy a pretty good AR and that is about the top of the defensive carbine list. You people that sit round drooling at the thought of shooting somebody need to go back to playing video games, if you know what I mean.

I have yet to see an autoloader in 243 or 270, much less one that can carry more than 5 rounds. Might be some out there, dunno. Whether or not you like the AR platform in 223 is pretty immaterial, that is the go to platform, and they are available in stouter cartridges. Humbly suggest you stick to strictly defensive verbiage when talking about two legged targets, if you know what I mean.

Pull the cork out of your wallet and get something worth owning for the purposes intended. SC is right about pricing on a decent new AR that you can trick out later as budget allows, or you can still find used ones in pawn shops and gun shops.

Ok if bug in if paired with something semiauto. NFG for bug out. IMHO.

Your Rem 700 is a fine rifle for fairly long-distance hunting. If money is a little tight, you might consider an SKS, which will give you a short to medium range semi-auto rifle. Plus, it will leave enough money to buy a case or two of ammo. Is the SKS as "good" as the AK or AR?... Well, you shouldn't really care -- you should study the strengths of what you can afford and quit wasting time "lusting" after something else.

I can see you're a little confused, so you might look for book recommendations to help you see what will fit whatever your situation. I know there are some authors that teach self defense and tactical operations (what you seem to be interested in) -- everyone has their own situation to prepare for.

I for one may not have taken your posts for what they are. The questions you have asked have been unfocused and under the same general heading of "do you still beat your wife" striking me at least to take you for at best a bit arrogant, or at worst a pot stirring troll. My apologies if that is not so. Anyway, the answers you've gotten were as diffuse as your questions and clearly were not what you were looking for.

So then, after all this, I've concluded that you really are in the dark regarding preps and survival. Your focus on firearms is only part of the equation on preps, and may very well not be the most important part. Given that your questions were not well defined, I strongly suggest that you spend a bit of time reading on this forum, particularly General Survival for ideas and approaches to various scenarios that might match up with your situation, and give you some ideas that you can use to ask questions that are pertinent to your particular case. With a focused, pertinent question, you'll get responses that will give you the guidance you are looking for. I think.

I like the .270 as a hunting rifle and such but would avoid it and the .243 as SHTF guns. The ammo is to heavey to carry in much quantity if you have to bug out (7.62x39 would be much lighter and work very well at realistic ranges for anything defensive) and is also to expensive to stock deep on a budget.

If you are wanting a long range cartridge for a bolt gun for buging in I would go with a .30-06 or better yet .308. The Mosin Nagat would be a good choice on a budget since IIRC its in .308/7.62x54 and for $750 you should be able to get the rifle and 2/3k rounds of ammo to make sure you can take full advantage of the rifles capabilities. Either of these caliburs though are much more plentiful and can generaly be had cheaper.

Even the best of guns is useless if you cant feed it.

I have several rifle's shotguns pistols and revolvers in many calibres, the most of which I use for range or hunting purposes. I try to keep to what I consider to be the mainstream calibres.

My pistols are in .22 and 9mm, (yeah I know €uro pussy).
My revolvers are both Colt's, a Python and a Detective Special, .357mag and .38 special. I tend to have more .38 sp. wad cutter ammo than I do heavy SJHP .357mag ammo.

The Shot guns, an over and under and Mossberg, are fed with 12/70 ammo slugs and buckshot and smaller shot, because the O/u won't eat the 12/76 ammo.

    The rifles are in .22 .222rem. .223rem .308win & 8X57IS.

My LBE's are scenario/weapon orientated, ie bugging in, I won't be needing an ET., machete, 24hrs worth of rations and water etc.

I guess I been preparing all of my adult life for something that may or may never happen.

If you have these and it is for survival the 30-06 has killed everything on the planet, then it seems to me you are looking for a smaller caliber to fill the niche and would suggest a 223 of some sorts and for 750.00 you should be able to find a nice AR15 for that amount.
