    above referenced from wikipedia.

Based on this information only the 1964 coins are worth $6. which would = ~$16.35/oz of silver.

Good question. A pre-1965 US half dollar contains 0.361700 ozt of silver. The current COMEX (Commodities Exchange) price of silver as of this moment is $11.30 ozt., which would make the silver in a US pre-1965 half dollar worth $4.09.

But now, as Paul Harvey says, comes the rest of the story. COMEX prices are being manipulated downward by the large banks selling "naked shorts" or basically selling silver contracts for which they have no silver. The best open market for actual physical silver, showing fluctuations day to day would be eBay, and there is a website that tracks gold and silver coin sales on eBay: http://www.24hgold.com/english/buy_sell_silver_coins.aspx?co_id=0

While this site doesn't track the sell price of 90% pre-1965 coins, it doees track bullion coins such as the 1 ozt Silver American Eagle. As of this moment, SAEs are selling for an average price of $23.22 or at a 104.9% premium above th COMEX price. Yesterday, SAEs were selling for an average price of $19.08.

For silver content and value of US and Canadian silver coins, check out:

If you want a neat little utility that will display the current COMEX prices of gold and silver, download Kcast at: http://kcast.kitco.com/

So now let me try to answer your question, is a US pre-1965 half dollar worth $6.00? Depending on wear, and ignoring any collector's value (rare date, etc.), I've been buying mine at about $5.25 each including shipping. However, this does require a serious amount of digging on eBay. You may not want to invest the time that I do.

If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me and I'll get back to you within 24 hours maximum. I hope this helps... JP

Or see the box at the top of the page here. I think that is a Kitco feed.
