    Michael Steele on Gun Control

Source: Washington Post, Oct. 16, 2006 [This is a summary of the probable Wash. Post article; I don't want to buy the entire article from the Post in order to reproduce it. Text below is from the Issues 2000 link above--KJ]: http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/washingt...for+Senate+Run

Q: Your views on gun control?

A: My views are pretty much in line with the governor's. I grew up under some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. You can have all the gun control laws in the country, but if you don't enforce them, people are going to find a way to protect themselves. We need to recognize that bad people are doing bad things with these weapons. It's not the law-abiding citizens, it's not the person who uses it as a hobby.

Q: Should people have access to buy assault weapons?

A: Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if you're going hunting? That's overkill. But I don't think that means you go to a total ban for those who want to use gun for skeet shooting or hunting or things like that But what's the point of passing gun laws if we're not going to enforce them? If you want to talk about gun control, that's where you need to start. We've got 300 gun laws on the books right now. At the end of the day, it's about how we enforce the law.

I am a life member in the NRA, retired military, a hunter, and avid shooter. I recently attended a very interesting rifle shoot. called an "APPLESEED SHOOT", sponsored by a group called "Revolutionary War Veterans Association". Their catch phrase is "are you a cook or a rifleman?" Their 2 day shoots are outstanding. Also i recently read a book that they recommend called "Unintended Consequences" written by John Ross, published in 1996. a must read for all gun owners, and a copy should be sent to this politician now running the RNC.

keep your powder dry and your eyes and ears open!

"Uunintended consequences" is quite well known around here and shooting circles... :)
Muskets in the hands of George washington's citizens patriot army were every bit the equal or better than the military guns carried by the british troops. They WERE the"assault rifles of their day! Guns; effective , "scary" military style guns in the hands of the populace are the only real check on tryranny..it's such a simple concept.

Yes it is a simple concept and they understand it very well. That is why they are so desperate to get them out of the hands of the men/weman who would stand in their way.

They can have my guns if they are so desperate to get them.....
But, I will want a bargaining chip in return....
Let's say: 1 Apache attack helicopter for instance, fully loaded and armed with everything it can carry, and spares, always spares!
    I'm easy! (NOT cheap!)

Interesting. This is why I am considering myself more of a Libertarian these days. Personal freedom is more important to me than my vote counting. Here is a letter I just cut to the chairman. I will post a response if he has any spine:

    "Sir,

I would really like to know what your stance on gun control is. In this ever changing political climate I am reconsidering which party to support. I recently came across a quote by you that made me reconsider the Republican party (of which I have been a supporter for years). The question and answer given:

Q: Should people have access to buy assault weapons?
A: Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if you're going hunting? That's overkill. But I don't think that means you go to a total ban for those who want to use gun for skeet shooting or hunting or things like that But what's the point of passing gun laws if we're not going to enforce them? If you want to talk about gun control, that's where you need to start. We've got 300 gun laws on the books right now. At the end of the day, it's about how we enforce the law.

Now, to look at this problem we have to look at the root of the problem. That is definition. An AW by any military's definition on the face of the Earth would include a select fire feature. Meaning that so-called AW as defined by the currently introduced legislation is defined incorrectly. To more correctly describe what the Brady Campaign and an other Constitution haters wish to ban are essentially semi-automatic firearms.

These sorts of bans are aimed at the target shooting crowd. This includes practical shooters across the country. They also target high-power rifle shooters which has been a staple in making marksmen out of young men for decades (a slowly eroding skill that we may very well need some day as a nation). Service rifle matches use primarily semi-auto rifles including AR15s, M1As, and M1 Garands. Also affected are sportsmen that use semi-auto rifles for varmint and large game hunting or semi-auto shotguns for bird hunting or for sporting clays. I myself recently took an eight point white tail with a semi-auto "assault weapon" while hunting in Tennessee. The weapon I used was a semi-auto copy of an M14- a rifle used by the US military still. It wasn't "overkill". I fired one round to drop the buck.

Banning these rifles will do nothing other than stop law abiding citizens from owning them. It is already illegal for a felon to own a gun. Why does he care if there is another law on the books. Using a gun in a crime adds time to a sentence and can make the crime an automatic felony. Banning the guns will not stop criminals from using them.

So, when you ask why someone would want an "assault weapon", I hope you can understand my stance and the thousands of other gun owners that have expressed their opinion on the issue by buying guns at record numbers during the worst economic situation since the Great Depression. The #1 rifle in popularity and sales for the last few years has been an assault rifle- the AR15. It's so mainstream in outdoor sports that even Remington and Smith and Wesson have created their own variations. The direction in technology and performance has led many sportsmen in the direction of semi-auto guns and manufacturers are following suit with production.

I look forward to your response as do thousands of other people who will read this letter and your response (or lack thereof) online.

    Thanks, "

    I would have added:

"Additionally, I know that you are only one out of many Representatives, and you are either being blackmailed into submission by those who surround you, or through some other scheme, or you are afraid at this time to take a stand and do what you have been charged by your constituents to actually do; which is, to protect and defend our constitution and the rights of the People. I know that you may very well be voted out of office by the other representatives, as has already been done numerous times before...but, you still have a sworn duty to uphold your oath and charge of office. As our servant, I hereby place you on notice that you must fulfill your duties in the honorable manner that We, the People expect. The second amendment to our constitution is not negotiable. Your constituents own weapons, no matter your definition or prerogative -to keep our government in line and within the boundaries which have been set by our constitution."
