    Here it comes:

Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban
The Ban Expired in 2004 During the Bush Administration.

    By JASON RYAN
    WASHINGTON, Feb. 25, 2009—

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.

Mexican government officials have complained that the availability of sophisticated guns from the United States have emboldened drug traffickers to fight over access routes into the U.S.

A State Department travel warning issued Feb. 20, 2009, reflected government concerns about the violence.

"Some recent Mexican army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat, with cartels employing automatic weapons and grenades," the warning said. "Large firefights have taken place in many towns and cities across Mexico, but most recently in northern Mexico, including Tijuana, Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juarez."

At the news conference today, Holder described his discussions with his Mexican counterpart about the recent spike in violence.

"I met yesterday with Attorney General Medina Mora of Mexico, and we discussed the unprecedented levels of violence his country is facing because of their enforcement efforts," he said.

Holder declined to offer any time frame for the reimplementation of the assault weapons ban, however.

"It's something, as I said, that the president talked about during the campaign," he said. "There are obviously a number of things that are -- that have been taking up a substantial amount of his time, and so, I'm not sure exactly what the sequencing will be."

In a brief interview with ABC News, Wayne LaPierre, president of the National Rifle Association, said, "I think there are a lot of Democrats on Capitol Hill cringing at Eric Holder's comments right now."

During his confirmation hearing, Holder told the Senate Judiciary Committee about other gun control measures the Obama administration may consider.

"I think closing the gun show loophole, the banning of cop-killer bullets and I also think that making the assault weapons ban permanent, would be something that would be permitted under Heller," Holder said, referring to the Supreme Court ruling in Washington, D.C. v. Heller, which asserted the Second Amendment as an individual's right to own a weapon.

The Assault Weapons Ban signed into law by President Clinton in 1994 banned 19 types of semi-automatic military-style guns and ammunition clips with more than 10 rounds.

"A semi-automatic is a quintessential self-defense firearm owned by American citizens in this country," LaPierre said. "I think it is clearly covered under Heller and it's clearly, I think, protected by the Constitution."

    Coffee less rant:

Well at least the NRA is taking a strong position."It's clearly, I think, protected by the Constitution."

So now we have to keep our semi automatics out of the hands of Carlos Escobedo the international drug lord."Who clearly; I think has access to fully automatic military firearms and ordinance"My words.

NONE of which is affected by the AWB! Those weapons are already restricted under the Gun Control Act of 1934.
The Antis are blowing smoke in the eyes of the gullible Public again.

    Of course...that's it.
The whole Mexican Cartel buys their weapons from inside the US.
Not a single one has come up from their peaceable neighbours to the south of them.

An assertion that all those arms come from the US begs for proof positive. On the one hand, there is ample proof of northbound bodies, but little in the way of objective evidence of southbound guns.

The "Mexican Guberment" if that's what they have there, claims the U.S. is instrumental in moving firearms across the border, to bolster the drug cartels....?
Strange, I thought it was OUR guberment doing that, by "giving away" billions in aid and arms to their so-called MILITARY!
Like those Texas sheriff's and deputies that faced those .50 BMG's!
Their military is bought and paid for by drug dollars, and they are using our weapons, and our technology, against us at our own borders!
So, yes, friends we need to take away all the guns from those law abiding AMERICANS, and give them to the MEXICAN human smugglers and drug lords!
Sounds like something OUR elected idiots would buy into!

What exactly constitues an "assault weapon"?
Depends on where you are, the people involved, and the lawyers/judges interpretation of the "laws".....
In Texas, a man hit his wife with a bag of frozen squirrel meat, because she refused to cook them for his dinner....
That was, and still is, on the books, as a classic example of a "device", used by one person, to assault another,...in this case frozen squirrels!
So, we must ban any and all meats, or anything else that could be "picked up" and "used" to "strike", or, "in any way shape or form be used" to "assault" any other person.
    That's weird!
    Ever throw/shoot spitwads/spit-balls in school?
You have assaulted another person, and if the laws hold true to form, you could be charged today with the use of: "A BIOLOGICAL WEAPON" as it contained bodily excretions from one, to "attack" another!
    WOW!
So, what are we to do?
    Ban rubber bands too?
In the military, I saw one man hit a cook in the face with his tray, that had a portion of lima beans on it.....
He was not charged with anything....?
Seems that I told him to NOT eat those damned beans as they were full of cutworms!
    The cook was demoted!
    Yup, True story!
He could be tried for that today!
    Interesting isn't it?

If the mexicans don't want their citizens to break the law and come across the border with illegally purchased US weapons they should pass a law to fix it or they should build a wall along the border to keep their own people out! **** them. Let the druggers kill each other.

We can see how well that law will work. It hasn't worked to keep them from getting them todate.

A lucrative business in the borderlands. An $800 AR-15 here will bring $2000 across the river. Provided it is convertible to FA. The border patrol regularly catches truck loads of AR's, AK's, .50's etc. attempting to cross the border.
I'm not saying all of them come from our side but there is a robust blackmarket.

Remember there are people on this side of the river that would sell there mother for the right price ,sad but true .
They care more about themselves than they do about our country .
