This video is Seriously Crazy, Scary, Thought Provoking and unfortunately True!

The onset of anarchy begins with the perception of impending famine. Then, a certain foresightful group will adopt the strategy that it's better to steal a neighbor's food today than to have him eat it tomorrow. And they'll do that while they still have food. They won't wait until after they run out.

If you want to survive a famine, you'd better have a store of food that won't be discovered when the mobs break into your house. And you'd better starve yourself enough to fit in with the mob. Because if you don't look starved, you'll be advertising to one and all that you have a source of food.

Then your friends and neighbors will torture the location of it out of you before they eat you.

And one other thing: Don't put your empty Spam cans and Ramen wrappers out in the trash. That'll just get everybody all excited.

No animal is more dangerous than a hungry human.

Did some research on several diseases (like rickets) related to starvation for my Book - The Fisher People

Starvation is a slow and somewhat painful process:

Despite the cause, starvation takes about the same course and consists of three phases. The events of the first two phases happen even during fairly short periods of dieting or fasting. The third phase happens only in prolonged starvation and may end in the person's death.

    Starvation, The First Phase

During the first stage of starvation, blood glucose levels are maintained through the production of glucose from proteins, glycogen and fats. At first, glycogen is broken down into glucose. Only enough glycogen; however, is stored in the person's liver to last a few hours. After that period of time, blood glucose levels are maintained by the breakdown of fats and proteins. Fats are decomposed into glycerol and fatty acids. Fatty acids can be used as a source of energy, particularly by skeletal muscle, thereby decreasing the use of glucose by tissues other than the brain. Glycerol may be used to make a small amount of glucose, yet most of the glucose is formed from the amino acids of proteins. Some amino acids might be used directly for energy.

    Starvation, The Second Phase

In the second phase, which might last for several weeks, fats are the main energy source. A person's liver metabolizes fatty acids into ketone bodies that can be used as a source of energy. After approximately a week of fasting, a person's brain starts to use ketone bodies, as well as glucose, for sources of energy. Proteins not essential for survival are used first.

    Starvation, The Third Phase

The third phase of starvation starts when a person's fat reserves are depleted and there is a switch to proteins as the major source of the person's energy. Muscles, the largest source of protein in the body, are quickly depleted. At the end of this phase, proteins - essential for cellular functions, are broken down and cell function degenerates. Along with loss of weight, symptoms of starvation include:
    • Apathy
    • Withdrawal
    • Listlessness
    • Increased susceptibility to disease
Few people die directly from starvation because they usually die of an infectious disease first. Additional signs of starvation may include flaky skin, changes in hair color and massive edema in the lower limbs and abdomen, causing the person's abdomen to seem bloated. During the process of starvation, the ability of the human body to consume volumes of food also decreases.

    FWIW -

I don't like how some people use "Anarchy" to describe lawlessness and amoral behavior. I guess it's fitting in a sense, since Anarchy is the total absence of government. But, I don't find that such a bad idea, given the condition of "government" these days. I prefer to use the term WROL (without rule of law) to describe this situation, and it can be violent and disparaging, but also becomes an opportunity for people to freely engage in positive, unrestricted ways, too.

If we see a power down/grid down scenario for any reason, be it natural disaster (flood, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, CME) or due to economic collapse, violence will occur. Chances are, all bets are off at this point --anything goes.

One thing the video points out, though indirectly, is that these times of crisis come, and while they may extend over vast areas, they are always temporary. The bad times come, the bad times go.

Unless you are one of the ones that did not survive.

How long will the bad times last? Usually not more than 4 years, and often no more than one,

After that, things start getting better, slowly at first, but inexorably.

If you can store (and hide) a five-year supply of food for your entire family, you can get through just about anything. That's if you can also keep your nosy neighbors at bay. And maybe the government, too.

It also kind of demonstrates that fact that you can't grow a vegetable garden in the middle of a famine. Your food sources have to be both secret and inaccessible to others.

Maybe we need a threat on how to grow a secret garden.

I went to sprouting for greens because the nutrition is high and you can sprout anywhere, hide the trays, and look like a veggie nut. No one takes vegetarians seriously =)
