Forgive me if this is already covered somewhere in this forum. I seldom read this one, it is akin to reading Greek to me.

I am looking for a means to access web sites that will hide the geographic area that I am at.

I live in the Middle East and there are many sites that will block downloads to this area due to piracy concerns. Even Amazon blocks many books from being downloaded and all video's. Netflix, and sites like it are useless over here. I get a "Not allowed in your area" message whenever I try to rent or buy movies, TV shows and books.

    I came across this article;

How to browse the Web anonymously - Gadgetbox on msnbc.com

and was wondering if you techno guys had any advice? A web proxy such as Anonymouse.org or HideMyAss.com. ?

Or would it work better for me to use a VPN such as Witopia and StrongVP.
I don't mind paying a fee for the service. And if it makes a difference I use Firefox.

Also on a related subject. I am looking for a mail forwarding service. Do you know of any? A lot of companies will not ship international or to a FPO type address so I have a lot of trouble getting anything shipped here.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks, MM.

    Tor Vidalia Project

Find your version (windows, etc) download and install. This page is very self explanatory and will have you up and running in minutes. It also install a special build of FF Aurora that they are calling the TOR Browser.

Took me 20 seconds to download and install. Now posting from TOR. Not really even much slower.
Check my IP between the two posts.

My solutions for simple workarounds have always been to use a VPN. I didn't click either of those VPN providors you listed, but they should have location-specific servers to select, so make sure they have a US based server.

I have used overplay for my nfl sunday ticket fix, and I have heard good things about strongvp, but it all comes down to how much trouble you are getting into and how many footprints you want to leave behind. Let me leave this to chew on: http://torrentfreak.com/which-vpn-providers-really-take-anonymity-seriously-111007/

Thanks guys. Two questions tho. Melbo, with the Tor system it says that you are bounced around a network around the world. So wouldn't that at times still show an international IP address and still be blocked on certain "US Only" sites?
The VPN in the link above StrongVP says that you can select US or Europe IP. So wouldn't that be better or would a combination of the two be best?

I don't care about hiding my footprint or security so much as just showing a national IP so that I can access sites that block international downloads.

Yes, you will often 'show' as coming from Germany or the UK, etc.

It might not help you when you wanted to look National although it might help you get through to sites that are restricted in the country you are in. A VPN may work for that as well.

I know that Tor is heavily used in internet censored countries like China. I don't know if they can use a VPN service?

You can 1 click reset Tor to give you a new IP which might take a couple of tries to get a US identity? not sure.

Web proxies block Javascript, it makes 90% of the web useless. So hidemyass-like sites are not an option.

Anyway, whatever solution chosen, don't forget to test it thoroughly.
