I dont sweat it. I tend to pick up stranded motorists or hichhikers (I also tend to keep a handgun under my thigh, out of sight but easily accesable, when I do to make sure we all stay friendly) but I also tend to just let them know to pas on the favor some time if they ask what they owe. No money= no way to claim business and figure its just good karma or paying back for folks who have done the same for me. Cops were idiots on this one anyway since I dont tend to see why waste time on that rather than say put out a bike thats unlocked and hit the folks that try to steal it or some such if they want to run a sting.
With gasoline costing what it does today, who the hell could blame someone for taking a few bucks for a ride.

Interesting post just a few weeks ago while out on a shopping trip with my son we stopped at a quicky mart to grab a soda before going to our main stores . Had my son run in and while waiting in the truck I noticed a woman going from car to car at the pumps behind me and she finally approached me . Claimed to need a ride to a local Metro link hub to get back to the city and had "Some Money" to pay me for the ride . While I kept telling her NO she kept all but insisting , Luckily after a few minutes low and behold a taxi cab pulls in behind her and saved the the day , I pointed to the cab and told her there ya go lady it's his JOB to give people rides . I wondered why she got such an odd look on her face before going to the cab . Despite having to wait nearly 10 minutes for my son to come out before I could leave she never did get in the cab and go anywhere . Perhaps this is the the cops newest Nationwide "Sting" to raise more money for their communities/states ?
This is a stupid waste of our money. However I bet the Cops like it cause its NO risk to them and lets them make a couple of K notes in fines. I know Why not go out and trap some drug dealers? or Illegal Immagrants? or Hookers for all I care. Not screw with Good people doing nice things for others. As for that woman who wanted a ride, what a few choice words I have for her. and where does a "Customer Relations employee" get away with doing a police officers job? The problems with this scenario keep going and going.
I don't even understand what the problem is if he IS offering rides for money. Where's the harm in that?
The local gov dont get its money for the hack lisence (cab drivers permit) the state dont get its money for a chaufers lisence and the IRS dont get to take their bite of it....basicly the same harm as doing business in an area controled by the mob or gangs that collect 'insurance' premiums and not paying, they want their cut and if they dont get it they will work hard to screw with your life. After all, thats about all our gov has turned into anyway is a strong arm group that forces its will on everyone else and demands its cut of all the action going on.
Naturally the "License Gestapo" will have P.R. people with news clip horror stories about illegal immigrants soliciting people as taxis only to take them to the barrio and mutilate them with machetes from Walmart then raping the poodle while making their children watch. This does occasionally happen.
