<!-- Begin .post -->Democrat uses "Assault Rifle" to defend family

Former Democratic Congressional and Senate candidate uses an "assault rifle" to defend his family. "Indian Hill lawyer and former congressional candidate Paul Hackett says he was woken up by 'criminal activity'on November 19 and 'took affirmative action to protect his wife and family from an unknown disturbance at his house.'" There is a certain irony here. Assuming that this gun is a real "assault rifle," it is interesting that the leftwing HuffingtonPost is giving the case such positive coverage. Of course, they face a certain tension. On the one hand, two of their columnists are Josh Sugarman and the Brady Campaign's Paul Helmke. On the other hand, Hackett is a liberal Democrat who they supported when he ran for office.

<DD>INDIAN HILL - Indian Hill lawyer and former congressional candidate Paul Hackett - armed with a loaded assault rifle - chased down three men in a car after it crashed into a fence at his home in the early morning hours of Nov. 19.

The driver was charged with failure to maintain reasonable control, driving under suspension and carrying a concealed weapon - a pair of brass knuckles found in his pocket - according to the Indian Hill police.

Indian Hill Rangers consider the matter closed, but a Hamilton County grand jury two weeks ago took testimony from the three men in the car and the ranger who investigated the incident, according to an Indian Hill police report.

Indian Hill Police Chief Chuck Schlie said police don't plan any further investigation. . . .

The discussion on the leftwing HuffingtonPost is pretty entertaining. Many are condeming Hackett, saying that what he did was unjustified. It seems to me that when dealing with three men like that, there is nothing wrong about being careful, and in addition the news story doesn't contain a lot of detail about what happened so the conclusions that are being drawn seem strained.

UPDATE: As expected, it turns out that this "assault rifle" was a civilian version of the AR-15, meaning that it is a semi-automatic rifle. A .223 caliber rifle can't even be used for deer hunting in most states because the bullet is not big enough to ensure that you will kill, as opposed to wound the animal.</DD>

See, it's true. I don't recomember which one of you monkeys posted that 'those who lobby against guns are the ones who have them'. It's true. Liberal democrat that most likely railed against 'assault rifles' through his career, owns one and will brandish it, if not use it too.

So the plan is simple. When they come to confiscate your firearms, just go to the liberals houses and you'll get resupplied.

This just goes to show it's a 'Do as I say, not as I do' society. Anyone know if good sturdy rope is on sale or not? This just makes you mad. Reminds me of those that keep going on about they are against a certain thing and come to find out they were doing that same thing they kept saying they were against.

Such as, it wouldn't have surprised me if those anti-drugs people aren't high as kites. Ya know.

Well Tailor, we already know most of those yelling about gay marriage and victimizing children go after their underage male assistants.

So true. I was just hoping that was a fluke. Yeah right.

Well at least now that eliminates one voice from spouting anti-'assault weapon' retoric. He just shot his credibility all to hades. I forget what book I read it in, or where I heard it, though there is a saying that mentions that it is better to be hot or cold and not lukewarm.

Wonder if anyone saw this. He spouts against 'assault' weapons and then owns one. So that means he's riding the fence though he wants it to be only him that has weapons. What does he think? If they pass a law making it illegal for all citizens to own firearms except police and military, that he would be exempt? I'd go kick his door in just for sheer spite. Haha. Look to the future and hope this nimrod isn't anywhere near it.

Do we know this bird is anti gun, or are we assuming so because he's a Dem? There are (however few) Dems that are less rabid than Schumer and his ilk.[dunno]

Okay, Monkeys. It seems that I was a little too fast on the draw and shot myself in the foot. I retract anything I said about Hackett being anti-weapons.

Hackett is a former Marine. (Or is it ex-marine? I can never tell. I think it's former Marine as he isn't holding post, and not ex as in once a Marine, always a Marine. Oh well, yall get my drift.) He's a Marine and may be in Iraq at the moment. Don't really know. NRA liked him, though not over his competition. Why? More voting power? Deeper pockets? Who knows?

He had this to say in a post in the Post...

"I'm for limiting government. I'm for fiscal responsibility. I'm for a strong national defense. I'm for fair trade. This means I don't need Washington to tell me how to live my personal life or worship my God. And I don't need Washington to dictate what decisions my wife can make with her doctor any more than I need Washington to tell me what guns I keep in my gun safe. I fought for Iraq's freedom, not to come back and have a government tell me I can't have my freedom because the world is too dangerous. Our freedoms are what make America great and desirable to the rest of the world and any government that wants to take away its people's freedoms under the pretense of national security is what makes the world more dangerous."

So, he may have some ideas on things that I do not think the same on, though is definitely not the first image that I grabbed and ran with. I should have known better. Always look before you leap.

He even was quoted as calling someone in the White House, and who lives there, a SOB. Wonder who that could have been?

Democrat yes. Liberal democrat, no. Vote for him? Maybe. I guess that he was a shocker to his party as well. A conservative dem is a rare thing indeed. That's why we need to move away from this Dem. or Rep. thing.

Well, I'm off to remove the foot from my mouth. Have fun all. [footinmouth]

I don't know if I'm reading this right. He chased the attackers down before or after they started running? If he chased them down I'd call that unethical. If he was just trying to defend himself from a life-threatening situation I'd call that ethical.

Need more details though. This kind of thing needs to be taken on a point by point basis.

And towards the bottom of the page, it has another description of the 'incident'.

Associated Press reported that on 2006-11-19 a car crashed into a fence at Hackett's Indian Hill home. Hackett chased the car down in his truck, carrying an AR-15 assault rifle, and upon finding the vehicle stopped in a driveway, he ordered the occupants of the car to lie face down on the ground. The driver of the car was charged with failure to maintain reasonable control, driving under suspension and carrying a concealed weapon, a pair of brass knuckles found in his pocket.[1] Hackett told police "he had done this about 200 times in Iraq, but this time there was not a translation problem." A grand jury is currently investigating the incident.
