Would an EMP detonation have any effect on cd's and dvd's? Read somewhere of storing cd's for entertainment after shtf. Good idea if you have time. Bad idea if they are wiped out. Any information emp effect?

The CDs and DVDs should not be affected, they are "burned" in physically. However, the playback machine is apt to suffer some unless well shielded during the event.

Yep, the CDs and DVDs wouldn't be affected at all by EMP; But you better store an extra DVD Player, or computer in a Faraday box if you want to watch those DVDs. You also better store batteries, or have a good generator, otherwise those CDs/DVDs won't be much use.

    to distroy a cd
put one in a microwave, I put it on a cup of water and set the microwave to run for a few seconds and see what happens to the cd.

Cheaper and easier, put on work gloves, hold the CD inside a waste basket and bend it. No way what's left can be put together and decoded. (Don't ask me how I know about the gloves and inside the basket.)

Gubermint forensics geeks CAN recover data from 'destroyed' media - it won't be complete, but much can be extracted. A lot of folks are in trouble because of this capability.
You'd need to burn the disk totally.

CDs/DVDs would be great for after the SHTF. There would be entertainment for a while if they were protected from standard damaging methods. The player would definitely have to be protected. CD players are okay though if you are going to go through the whole process of saving such items for later, might I suggest a standard computer, suggesting not a laptop.

If there are no savy peoples to repair computers, a desktop can be made to work by most people by following the old 'put it together like a puzzle' method. Laptops are a much harder deal. To be sure, you can grab duplicate parts to store away also. Though as said, don't forget how to run it when the world comes to a screeching halt.

I plan on doing the same thing, so I have put thought into this. Good luck and I say it's a good plan. Just don't forget about old fashioned entertainment.
